Primary objective
To provide the NT Government and its Authorities and Instrumentalities with the best possible legal service with respect to
civil litigation matters.
Context statement
The Litigation Division provides legal advice and representation in relation to a wide range of civil litigation and administrative
law matters to the Northern Territory Government, its agencies and statutory bodies. The Division is currently organised
into several discrete teams and this position is in the Law Enforcement team. This position is part of the domestic violence
(DV) unit. Working with the other lawyer in the DV unit, the successful applicant will conduct the domestic violence practice
on behalf of NT Police and will assist in other areas as directed.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide legal advice and legal representation in domestic violence matters daily and report to the Supervising Senior
Lawyer/Team Leader or Director of the Division on the progress of matters.
2. Maintain a high level of knowledge of relevant areas of the law and of relevant practices and procedures.
3. Provide a high level of service to clients including preparation of court documentation, correspondence and other
materials.
4. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing and prepare and present legal concepts, positions or factual analyses
clearly and correctly.
5. Represent the Solicitor for the Northern Territory, liaise with clients and deal with people (including protected persons)
and issues in a professional manner.
6. Organise work to manage priorities effectively and meet deadlines.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Admission as an Australian legal practitioner and eligibility to obtain a local practising certificate.
2. Demonstrated experience in the practice of law in relevant or related fields.
3. Ability to organise and manage own personal legal practice.
4. Ability to effectively negotiate and communicate with clients and stakeholders in a professional manner.
5. Ability to manage and organise files to meet client/Court needs and deadlines.
6. Ability to cope with pressure (i.e. high-volume workload) and work as part of a team.
Desirable
1. Experience and knowledge across the family law and family violence jurisdiction.
2. Experience using computerised file tracking and time recording systems in a legal office.
3. Experience in interacting and working with people at all levels and from diverse cultures.
