Our Role
This role is based at Graymont’s limestone quarrying and production facility in Galong, NSW. Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Specialist provides professional HSE leadership and operational support across quarrying and processing activities.
The HSE Specialist is a key member of the Galong leadership team and works collaboratively with plant employees, contractors, site management and regional HSE to ensure compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements through the effective application of Graymont’s safety and environmental management systems.
The role plays a critical part in fostering a strong safety culture, ensuring environmental compliance, and driving continuous improvement aligned with Graymont values.
Key Responsibilities
Health, Safety & Environmental Leadership
Provide day-to-day HSE leadership and support to site operations, employees and contractors.
Promote and embed Graymont’s safety culture, Life Saving Rules and values.
Act as the on-site HSE subject matter expert for systems, processes and standards.
Risk Management & Safe Operations
Facilitate safety and environmental risk management activities, including hazard identification, risk assessment and implementation of effective controls.
Support teams to maintain high housekeeping standards and ensure corrective actions are completed.
Participate in reviews of site safety and environmental management systems, procedures and processes.
Support safe systems of work including permit-to-work, isolation, confined space and working-at-heights programs.
Training, Competency & Engagement
Coordinate and deliver workplace-level HSE training in accordance with Graymont HSE Training Standards.
Conduct site inductions, toolbox talks and safety briefings.
Monitor employee and contractor training, competency and certification requirements.
Stay current with PPE technology and ensure appropriate selection, availability, training and maintenance.
Incident & Injury Management
Lead and support incident, accident and near-miss investigations using ICAM or equivalent methodology.
Communicate investigation findings and support implementation of corrective actions.
Ensure timely internal and statutory incident reporting.
Facilitate workplace injury management and Workers Compensation / Recover at Work programs.
Environmental Management & Compliance
Facilitate environmental monitoring programs, including dust, emissions and water sampling.
Support compliance with environmental licences, permits and consent conditions.
Ensure environmental licences and approvals are maintained and renewed within required timeframes.
Support site rehabilitation planning and implementation in collaboration with specialist consultants.
Audits, Reporting & Documentation
Support internal audits, external audits and regulatory inspections.
Ensure timely and accurate completion of company and statutory HSE reporting requirements.
Develop, review and maintain site-level HSE documentation.
Track and verify closure of corrective actions.
Contractor, Stakeholder & Community Engagement
Support contractor HSE onboarding, verification and compliance monitoring.
Investigate and coordinate responses to stakeholder or community complaints within required timeframes.
Support stakeholder engagement activities including community meetings, sponsorships and local initiatives.
Assist the Plant Manager with engagement of regulators, local councils, neighbours and government authorities in line with Graymont values.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
Essential
Certificate IV, Diploma or Degree in Work Health & Safety, Environmental Management or related discipline.
Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in a site-based HSE role within quarrying, mining, manufacturing, construction or heavy industry.
Strong knowledge of NSW WHS legislation and environmental regulatory requirements.
Experience conducting risk assessments, audits and incident investigations.
Strong communication and influencing skills.
Current Australian driver’s licence.
Desirable
ICAM investigation training or equivalent.
ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 systems experience.
Quarrying or limestone processing experience.
Environmental monitoring and rehabilitation exposure.
Work Environment
Fully site-based role at the Galong quarry and production facility.
Exposure to quarry operations, mobile plant, heavy equipment and dusty environments.
Regular interaction with operations, maintenance and contractors.
