About the role:
The Maternal Foetal Medicine Sonographer provides specialised ultrasound services supporting high-risk pregnancies within the Midwifery Unit at Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital. Working within a Maternal Foetal Medicine (MFM)-aligned service, you will perform a broad range of obstetric ultrasound examinations including first trimester screening, morphology, growth, Doppler studies, and foetal assessments within a Diagnostic and Developmental Ultrasound (DDU) model.
You will play an important role in clinical decision-making through accurate imaging, interpretation, and reporting, while collaborating closely with obstetricians, midwives, radiologists, and other clinicians. Established escalation pathways to tertiary MFM services at John Hunter Hospital support complex care.
In addition to clinical responsibilities, you will contribute to service development, quality assurance, audits, protocol optimisation, and continuous improvement initiatives. The role also includes mentoring and clinical guidance for junior sonographers, medical officers, and midwifery staff, while supporting efficient workflow coordination and accurate patient documentation. While the position has no direct reports, it provides clinical leadership within the service and reports to the Midwifery Manager Grade 3.
A structured orientation tailored to your experience level will support your transition into the role, with ongoing access to senior clinical support, case review, education, multidisciplinary learning, quality improvement activities, and continuing professional development. Additional training in maternal foetal medicine can also be supported to further develop subspecialty expertise.
