Where you will be working
You will be working in our dynamic Emergency Network which include John Hunter Hospital, Maitland Hospital, Belmont Hospital, Calvary Mater Newcastle, Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital, Port Macquarie Base Hospital and Manning Base Hospital. These sites offer fantastic metropolitan and rural experiences in Emergency Medicine and speciality terms for our ACEM Trainees.
John Hunter Hospital is one of the busiest Emergency Departments in Australia with Trauma and Retrieval focused presentations. Should you only require Tertiary time for your Training, this can be facilitated within the Network at John Hunter Hospital.
What you will be doing
The primary purpose of Trainee Stage 2-4 in Emergency Medicine is to provide high-quality medical care under appropriate supervision to undifferentiated patients presenting to the Emergency Department.
Our Emergency Medicine Network sites are fully accredited and meet all requirements for advanced training with the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM). We are proud of our consistently strong Fellowship examination outcomes, supported by a comprehensive education and training program that is closely aligned with the ACEM curriculum and focused on examination success.
Trainees have access to a diverse range of rotations across tertiary and metropolitan adult and paediatric Emergency Departments, as well as placements in intensive care, anaesthetics, retrieval medicine, inpatient and emergency paediatrics, ultrasound, and medical education. Complementing our strong Emergency Medicine training program is our outstanding Simulation Centre, with our FACEMs highly committed to simulation-based education, mentorship, and trainee development.
Trainees work under a level of supervision according to their competence in the following activities; Taking a leadership role in coordinating the admission, assessment, management, and discharge planning of patients. Communicating assessment and management decisions to other staff involved in the patient’s care. Communicating with the patient / family regarding the patient’s condition and management plans. Coordinating diagnostic tests and consultations with other medical specialists. Arranging the patient discharge process and liaising with local medical officers and community based care modalities for optimal post discharge care.
