IT Systems and Support Engineer
Full time | Ultimo, Sydney NSW
This is IT support with variety you will not find in a standard corporate environment. One day you are resolving POS issues on a busy bar floor before evening trade, the next you are tightening endpoint compliance policies, scripting away a repetitive task, or supporting systems behind a function centre, a gym and 190+ student clubs. If you like being hands-on, seeing the people you support, and owning problems through to fixed, this role will suit you.
About ActivateUTS
ActivateUTS brings the UTS experience to life beyond the classroom. We run 190+ student clubs and societies, support 455 elite athletes across 44 sports, and delivered over 5,800 events last year. Our commercial venues, including Aerial Function Centre, The Underground, The Loft on Broadway, The Terrace, ActivateFit.Gym and UTS Store, generate revenue that is fully reinvested into student programs and experiences. We are a not-for-profit of around 60 permanent staff and 100+ casuals across hospitality, fitness, events, retail and student engagement, all on one campus in the heart of the city.
About the Role
Reporting to the Head of IT & Digital, the IT Systems and Support Engineer provides frontline and escalated technical support across ActivateUTS, combined with hands-on systems administration responsibility. You are the technical point of contact for end-users, troubleshooting hardware, software, network and POS/EFTPOS issues, while also administering core systems including Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, the Microsoft 365 tenant, Microsoft Dynamics 365 CRM and Business Central.
This is a hands-on, fast-paced role suited to someone who is proactive by nature: comfortable keeping the day-to-day running smoothly, picking up technical tasks on the go, and resolving issues quickly before they escalate. You will work as part of a small, capable IT & Digital team with a genuine say in how things are run, direct access to senior technical leadership, and complex issues escalated rather than left with you.
This role is based on campus at Ultimo. Our users work in venues, kitchens, a gym and student spaces, and the best support happens at the point of the problem, so you will be on site full time through your first six months. On successful completion of probation, work from home may be considered by agreement with your manager, subject to operational requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Support
-
Provide frontline and escalated technical support to end-users across hardware, software, network and peripheral issues, minimising disruption to the business.
- Troubleshoot and resolve POS, EFTPOS and terminal issues to ensure seamless transactions and business continuity across our venues.
- Install and configure new hardware and software, ensuring all deployments are functioning properly.
- Monitor systems, servers and network infrastructure, identifying and prioritising issues affecting availability, performance or security.
- Apply system and software updates, patches and fixes to maintain optimal performance and security.
- Maintain clear, accurate documentation of issues, resolutions and troubleshooting steps.
Systems Administration
-
Administer and maintain core business systems, including Microsoft Dynamics 365 CRM, Business Central, Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID and the Microsoft 365 tenant.
- Manage user account and access provisioning and deprovisioning as part of onboarding and offboarding.
- Assist with database administration, troubleshooting and data integrity across business systems and integrations.
- Support security operations, including monitoring endpoint protection alerts and assisting with security policy configuration across Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace.
- Use scripting (PowerShell, Bash) and automation tools (Power Automate) to streamline repetitive tasks and improve efficiency.
- Log and escalate incidents with external vendors, including POS and website providers, and liaise with UTS IT and other partners.
- Provide backup support to the Business Systems Analyst function during periods of leave or high demand, including basic CRM administration, data hygiene and system configuration updates.
- Assist with monitoring data integrations between core business systems and support routine reporting and dashboards where systems knowledge is required.
About You
You are a capable, proactive IT professional who likes solving problems for real people, not just closing tickets. You are as comfortable talking a venue manager through an EFTPOS issue mid-service as you are building Group Policy from scratch, and you take pride in keeping an environment stable, secure and well documented. You work at pace, prioritise sensibly, and keep operations running smoothly with minimal oversight.
Essential Criteria
-
4+ years’ experience in IT support and systems administration, with a tertiary qualification in Computer Science, IT, or equivalent practical experience.
- Hands-on experience with business systems such as POS/EFTPOS, Microsoft Dynamics 365/CRM, and Microsoft Business Central.
- Strong administration experience across Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID and Microsoft 365, including user/group management, Group Policy design and configuration, and patch management/endpoint compliance policies.
- Solid networking fundamentals (DNS, DHCP, VPN, Wi-Fi, firewalls), domain records and email authentication standards (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), applied with a security-first mindset.
- Proficient across Windows and MacOS environments, with strong troubleshooting skills spanning hardware, software and systems issues.
- Experience with ticketing systems (e.g. Zendesk), RMM tools (e.g. NinjaOne, Datto RMM) and endpoint protection platforms (e.g. ESET, SentinelOne, Bitdefender).
- Understanding of system integrations and APIs, with experience configuring or connecting platforms together.
- Working knowledge of scripting (PowerShell, Bash) and automation tools such as Power Automate.
- Excellent communication skills, able to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
- A proactive, hands-on, can-do attitude, comfortable working at pace and independently resolving issues.
Desirable Criteria
-
Experience with Power BI, Microsoft Forms or other reporting/data tools.
- Familiarity with ITIL or other IT service management frameworks.
- Prior involvement in IT transformation projects.
- Formal certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator, ITIL Foundation, or similar.
