The Assembly Team Leader plays a key role in leading the day-to-day operations of the Assembly team, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards. This role is responsible for guiding, coaching and supporting team members, managing workflow and production priorities, and driving a strong culture of safety, accountability and continuous improvement across the assembly area
Key Responsibilities
Lead, coach and develop assembly team members, setting clear expectations for safety, quality, productivity and accountability while managing workforce requirements including labour allocation, leave, absenteeism, recruitment and labour hire.
Monitor team performance, conduct reviews, address performance or behavioural issues and foster a collaborative, high-performing culture.
Coordinate day-to-day assembly operations to achieve production targets safely, efficiently and to quality standards.
Maintain a visible presence on the assembly floor, providing technical guidance and hands-on support where required.
Monitor productivity, labour efficiency, work-in-progress and schedule adherence, identifying and resolving bottlenecks, delays and production constraints while minimising downtime, rework and waste.
Maintain assembly consumables, tooling, equipment and jigs in safe and serviceable condition, and uphold housekeeping standards.
Champion a strong safety and quality culture by ensuring compliance with workplace health and safety requirements, policies, procedures and approved assembly standards.
Conduct safety inspections, toolbox talks, risk assessments and incident investigations, ensuring hazards are controlled, team members are trained and competent, and corrective and preventative actions are implemented where required.
Monitor quality performance, investigate defects and non-conformances, and work closely with the Quality team to improve first-time quality, maintain procedures and support audits and continuous improvement initiatives.
Use NetSuite and other production systems to manage work orders, production progress and reporting, while identifying and resolving system or process issues and supporting workflow improvements.
Manage assembly department costs and performance, including labour, overtime, consumables, rework and operational expenditure, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce waste.
Monitor and report key operational metrics, analyse trends and implement corrective actions where performance falls below target, providing regular updates to the Head of Supply Chain on production, safety, quality, labour and operational risks.
Lead continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, quality, productivity, cost and workflow efficiency, applying Lean, 5S, Six Sigma or similar methodologies where appropriate.
Support implementation of new products, equipment and process changes, ensuring improvements are documented, embedded and aligned with supply chain and operational priorities.
Skills and Experiences:
Minimum two years’ experience in a team leadership or supervisory role within assembly, manufacturing, production or warehousing.
Demonstrated experience managing employees and production performance.
Practical experience in manual assembly processes.
Experience planning production schedules and managing work orders.
Strong computer skills and experience using ERP systems, preferably NetSuite.
Experience training employees and assessing competency.
Experience managing safety, quality and operational compliance.
Preferred
Formal qualification or certification in leadership, manufacturing, operations or supply chain management.
Experience controlling operational costs and monitoring operational performance to ensure assembly activities are delivered within approved budgets and cost targets.
Experience with Lean, Six Sigma, 5S or similar continuous improvement methodologies.
Experience managing labour hire providers and contingent workforces.
Experience working with quality management systems.
Experience leading production improvement projects.
Experience supporting new product introductions or engineering changes.
