Disability Support Workers – Autism and Complex Physical Support
Harmony Home Disability Services is seeking reliable and experienced Disability Support Workers to join a consistent support team for a 22-year-old participant with Level 3 Autism, intellectual disability and complex physical support needs.
The participant requires workers who can communicate clearly, understand his individual communication style and take the time to build genuine rapport with him.
Available Shifts
We are currently recruiting for a combination of:
- Morning shifts: 7:00 am–3:00 pm (Mon, Fri, Sat)
- Active overnight shifts (1:1): 10:00 pm–7:00 am (Mon-Sun)
- Morning shifts will be 2:1 support arrangement (where you will be paired with an experinced worker)
About the Role
Support duties include:
- In-home support and assistance with daily routines
- Personal care, showering and hygiene support
- Hoist transfers and use of a shower chair
- Supporting the participant in accordance with his Behaviour Support Plan
- Implementing behaviour support and regulated restrictive practice requirements
- Medication support, including medication administered through a PEG
- Engaging the participant through his interests, including music, children’s shows, DVDs and his iPad
- Completing accurate shift notes, incident reports and communication with the family and management team
Communication and Rapport Requirements
Strong spoken and written English communication skills are essential for this position.
Applicants must be able to:
- Communicate clearly with the participant, his family and other members of the support team
- Understand and follow detailed verbal and written instructions
- Recognise and respond appropriately to changes in the participant’s communication and behaviour
- Communicate calmly and clearly during challenging situations
- Complete accurate shift notes and incident reports
- Build rapport through the participant’s interests and preferred activities
The participant enjoys familiar Australian children’s television programs, music, DVDs and using his iPad. Workers should be comfortable engaging with these interests and have a general familiarity with common Australian expressions, humour, television and everyday cultural references.
The successful workers will be able to understand the participant’s references, participate in conversations about his interests and use these shared interests to develop a positive and trusting relationship.
We Are Looking for Workers Who Are
- Patient, consistent, reliable and emotionally mature
- Confident supporting a participant with Level 3 Autism and behaviours of concern
- Able to build rapport and have fun with the participant
- Physically capable of safely completing transfers and personal care tasks
- Comfortable using a hoist and other manual handling equipment
- Willing to complete participant-specific training and meet-and-greet sessions
- Available for regular and ongoing shifts
- Able to work collaboratively within a support team and alongside other providers
Experience in complex care, autism support, positive behaviour support, active overnight shifts, PEG medication support or restrictive practices is essential.
Mandatory Requirements
Applicants must hold or be willing to provide:
- NDIS Worker Screening Clearance
- Working With Children Check, where applicable
- Current First Aid and CPR certificates
- NDIS Worker Orientation Module certificate
- Relevant disability, individual support or nursing qualification, or demonstrated equivalent experience
- Current driver’s licence and reliable vehicle
- Evidence of working rights in Australia
- Manual handling and medication competency
- Ability to comply with all behaviour support, incident reporting and restrictive practice requirements
