About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Design Manager – Substations to lead the design and delivery of high-voltage electrical substation projects.
This role is critical in driving design excellence across both internal teams and external design partners, ensuring seamless integration, compliance, and quality outcomes across all project phases.
You will play a key leadership role working closely with project managers, clients, and stakeholders to deliver complex projects safely, on time, and to a high standard.
Key Responsibilities
Design Leadership & Delivery
- Lead the design of high-voltage substations from concept through to execution
- Provide technical leadership across internal teams and external consultants
- Ensure designs meet regulatory standards (AS, IEC, IEEE), client expectations, and project requirements
- Conduct design reviews, validations, and approvals to ensure quality and compliance
Management of Internal & External Design Resources
- Oversee and coordinate internal engineers and outsourced design partners
- Define scopes, deliverables, and expectations for external consultants
- Monitor performance and ensure alignment to quality, timelines, and project objectives
- Drive seamless integration of outsourced design outputs
Project Coordination & Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as the key technical interface between engineering, construction, procurement, and clients
- Lead design review meetings and provide solutions to complex design challenges
- Ensure design deliverables align with overall project goals
- Travel interstate to support project execution and stakeholder engagement
Client Relationship & Business Development
- Build and maintain strong client relationships
- Support proposal development, tenders, and technical presentations
- Identify opportunities for service expansion and “up-selling”
- Provide technical input to cost estimates, feasibility studies, and bids
Proposal & Project Development
- Guide projects through lifecycle stages: concept, EPC pricing, negotiation, and execution
- Lead risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies
- Ensure accurate project planning, timelines, and resource allocation
- Support governance reviews including commercial, legal, and financial inputs
Quality, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all works meet WHS requirements and EPEC safety standards
- Implement best-practice design assurance processes to minimise errors and rework
- Support regulatory approvals and compliance submissions
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a multidisciplinary team
- Foster a collaborative, high-performance, and supportive culture
- Conduct performance reviews, coaching, and career development planning
- Support recruitment, onboarding, and workforce planning
About You
Essential
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (or equivalent industry experience)
- Proven experience as a Design Manager or Project Manager in high-voltage substation projects
- Strong knowledge of substation design and HV systems
- Demonstrated experience delivering complex infrastructure projects end-to-end
- Excellent leadership, stakeholder management, and communication skills
- Strong commercial awareness, including cost estimation and risk management
- Class C Driver’s License
- General Construction Induction (White Card)
- Ability to travel interstate regularly
