Financial Accountant
Hobart, Tasmania
Permanent full-time
Salary: $100-115K + super
Mona isn’t your typical workplace. We operate with creative intensity across arts, events, music, hospitality, tourism, wine, and technology, each venture more ambitious than the last.
Our Financial Accountant does the technical accounting that holds all of that together. Consolidation across the group’s entities, statutory reporting, the tax compliance calendar, the control framework and the audit file. The finance function here already runs, so you won’t be building it from scratch. Your job is to make it sharper, faster and considerably less manual.
This is a hands-on role with no direct reports, sitting close enough to the Group CFO that you’ll see how group-level decisions actually get made. A significant part of it is building things, better reporting, better forecasting, less manual process. You’ll take the close delivered by our Finance Manager and turn it into a consolidated group position, work with our Data Modeller on reporting and business intelligence in Dynamics 365 and Power BI, and own a compliance calendar that does not move.
If you’re a few years into your career, CA or CPA qualified or nearly there, and you want real exposure fast and something substantial to build, this might be the role for you!
The Gig:
- Prepare the group consolidation across all entities in the consolidated group, working from the close delivered by our Finance Manager and coordinating with finance contacts at Darklab, Moo Brew and Art Processors at year end.
- Support our external tax advisors with the statutory financial statements for the group and its entities, in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards.
- Research new and amended accounting standards and write the technical position papers that go to the CFO.
- Prepare and lodge BAS accurately and on time, with control checks and reconciliation back to the general ledger.
- Prepare the group’s FBT, payroll tax, PAYG and income tax lodgements for CFO review, and keep the compliance calendar under control.
- Maintain tax records and substantiation to a standard that would stand up to ATO review.
- Coordinate the external audit, preparing working papers and schedules and turning requests around against the audit timetable.
- Apply and maintain the internal control framework, including delegations of authority, segregation of duties and authorisation thresholds, and escalate the gaps you find.
- Govern the chart of accounts and finance master data across the group.
- Build and automate the group cash flow forecast, working from the Finance Manager’s forecast and cash position.
- Work with our Data Modeller to develop reporting and business intelligence across the group in Microsoft Dynamics 365 and Power BI, and drive automation across finance and accounts payable processes.
- Bring new tools and techniques to the team, including AI-enabled tools, and show others how to use them.
- Support the CFO with capital and strategic financial modelling, scenario analysis, business cases and ad hoc cost-benefit analysis, and assist with statutory filings and registers.
The You:
- CA or CPA qualified, or well progressed towards completion, with around two to four years of relevant accounting experience.
- Exposure to month-end close, reconciliations and financial reporting. Experience in a multi-entity or group environment is an advantage.
- Working knowledge of Australian tax compliance, particularly GST and BAS preparation. Exposure to FBT or payroll tax is an advantage, and a willingness to learn them is essential.
- Genuine capability with data and automation tools. Advanced Excel including Power Query, and an understanding of Power BI, data modelling and data warehousing. We want someone who can build, and who can hold their own in a conversation with a data modeller. We are not expecting an expert.
- Evidence of having automated or improved something, a report, a reconciliation, a process, and the instinct to do it again.
- Exposure to an external audit process, from either side.
- An aptitude for financial modelling, and an understanding of why financial controls matter.
- Curiosity about AI-enabled tools and a track record of picking up unfamiliar systems quickly.
- High energy, self-directed, and comfortable working across a lot of moving parts, with the attention to detail to produce work that is complete, supportable and review-ready.
- The confidence to deal directly with the CFO, external auditors and advisors, and people who don’t speak finance.
- Experience in arts, hospitality, beverage or creative industries is desirable but not essential.
