Full-time, ongoing position

About the company
Coolways Mechanical Pty Ltd is the fleet maintenance and mechanical services entity within the Coolway Trans Group, an Australian-owned refrigerated transport and cold-chain logistics operator.
The Group operates a fleet of more than 170 revenue-earning units across twelve fleet classes, including refrigerated prime movers, refrigerated semi-trailers, B-double sets and rigid units, from depots at Glendenning and Yennora in New South Wales, Epping in Victoria, Morningside in Queensland and Jandakot in Western Australia.
The Group also operates refrigerated rail containers on the east–west corridor and cold storage facilities at its depots, including freezer, chiller and ante-room space. All refrigeration assets are maintained by the Group’s in-house workshops rather than outsourced, giving our mechanics full responsibility for the equipment across its service life.
About the role
We are seeking a qualified Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Mechanic to install, service, diagnose and repair transport refrigeration units, refrigerated trailer systems and depot freezer and chiller plant across the Group’s fleet and facilities.
Reporting to the Fleet Manager, the successful applicant will be based at our Glendenning workshop and will attend other depot sites as required. The position is central to maintaining the refrigeration equipment on which the Group’s cold-chain operations depend.
The equipment you will maintain and service
The position works across the full range of the Group’s refrigeration assets:

- Install, commission and decommission transport refrigeration units, refrigerated rail containers, cold rooms, freezer rooms and associated air conditioning equipment.
- Assemble and install pipework, tubing, fittings, valves and ducting, and braze, weld and pressure-test joints.
- Install, service and repair compressors, condensers, evaporators, pumps, fans and electric motors.
- Charge systems with refrigerant gas, test for leaks, and evacuate and recover refrigerant in accordance with licensing requirements.
- Commission and test refrigeration and air conditioning systems, check and calibrate controls, thermostats and set points, and verify operating performance against specification.
- Diagnose electrical, mechanical, control and refrigerant faults using diagnostic equipment, and repair or replace defective components.
- Carry out scheduled preventative maintenance and pre-trip inspections on transport refrigeration units, refrigerated trailers, rail containers and depot cold storage plant.
- Respond to equipment breakdowns, including attendance at depot, customer and roadside locations, and arrange recovery or substitution of affected units where required.
- Install, fault-find and repair temperature monitoring, data logging and telematics equipment fitted to the refrigerated fleet.
- Service and repair vehicle cabin air conditioning systems across the prime mover and rigid fleet.
- Monitor equipment performance and temperature control to support the Group’s cold-chain integrity and food safety requirements, and investigate temperature excursions.
- Maintain accurate service records, job cards, refrigerant handling logs and compliance documentation, and manage warranty claims and parts requirements with suppliers.
- Advise the Fleet Manager on equipment condition, repair options, component replacement and end-of-life recommendations across the refrigeration fleet.
- Comply with work health and safety legislation, the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management legislation, refrigerant handling and environmental requirements, and the Group’s workshop and Chain of Responsibility procedures.
