Lead national policy that improves the mental health and wellbeing of Australia’s veterans and their families.
The Mental and Social Health Policy Section sits within Health and Wellbeing Policy Branch, Policy and Research Division, in the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
The Director provides senior strategic leadership and expert policy advice to improve the mental health and wellbeing of veterans and the families of veterans.
The Director engages closely with a range of stakeholders across Government and the community to inform our work.
The role leads the analysis of new and emerging mental and social health policy issues and the design of strategic, evidence-informed and innovative policy options and program responses.
The Director is accountable for delivering complex policy outcomes consistent with government priorities and DVA’s strategic objectives.
DUTIES
As an
EL 2 Director you will be required to:
- Lead analysis of complex and emerging mental and social health issues affecting veterans and their families

Design forward-looking, innovative policy and program responses that improve outcomes and are deliverable at scale

Provide clear, timely and authoritative advice to senior executives and ministers

Lead and develop a high-performing, multidisciplinary team

Build capability through coaching, empowerment, performance management and inclusive leadership

Create a safe, respectful and psychologically healthy workplace
-
Build and maintain constructive relationships across government, including with central agencies
-
Engage effectively with veterans, families, ex-service organisations, community organisations and researchers

Represent DVA credibly in interdepartmental and external forums

Manage competing priorities in a high-tempo environment

Ensure policy and program work is evidence-based, ethical and compliant with legislative and governance requirements

Identify and manage risks, including reputational and implementation risks.
ELIGIBILITY
- Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS).

Any successful candidate external to DVA offered employment will be required to undergo a pre-engagement screening check, even if they have a security clearance. The screening check is conducted in accordance with the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework requirements.

Any successful candidate will also be required to obtain and/or maintain, a baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance as a minimum.
