Job Description
The Role:
Join OTR, part of Viva Energy Group, and play a key leadership role in delivering accurate, compliant, and timely payroll across a large, complex, multi-brand retail environment.
As Payroll Team Lead, you will provide strong technical leadership and day-to-day oversight of payroll operations, ensuring processes are robust, well-controlled, and continuously improving. Acting as a trusted partner to Retail Operations, you will enable seamless payroll outcomes delivered accurately and on time, every time while meeting all legislative, contractual, and governance requirements.
Key Responsibilities:

Lead the end‑to‑end payroll process, ensuring all payroll cycles are delivered accurately, on time and in compliance with legislative and industrial requirements

Provide hands-on people leadership to a team of Payroll Officers, growing capability, consistency and a culture of continuous improvement

Act as the primary technical escalation point for complex payroll queries, calculations, corrections and interpretations

Ensure strong payroll controls, reconciliations, audits and sign‑off processes are in place and adhered to

Maintain a deep understanding of awards, enterprise agreements, payroll legislation and system configuration

Identify and lead process improvement opportunities to reduce manual effort, errors and duplication

Partner with HR, Retail Operations, Finance and Systems teams to resolve issues and improve payroll outcomes

Manage payroll risks, incidents and remediation actions with clear communication and accountability

Ensure payroll documentation, procedures and training materials are current, clear and fit for purpose
Qualifications

Demonstrated experience leading payroll operations in a large, complex organisation

Strong technical payroll expertise, including legislation, awards and enterprise agreements

Proven experience improving payroll processes, controls and systems

High level of accuracy, attention to detail and risk awareness

Experience leading and developing a team in a high‑volume, deadline‑driven environment
