Our team is seeking an APAC Environmental Leader who will lead all environmental compliance aspects of Amazon operations across Japan, Australia, and Singapore. This role is responsible for providing strategic direction, technical leadership, and tactical execution across a portfolio of 125+ sites encompassing Customer Fulfillment (CF), Amazon Logistics (AMZL), and supporting operations under one of the most complex environmental regulatory structures Amazon operates in globally.
You will report to the Rest of World (RoW) Environmental Assurance and Protection (EAP) Leader, partnering with APAC operations leadership teams to execute environmental compliance programs ensuring adherence to all applicable national, state/prefecture, and local laws and regulations across three distinct regulatory jurisdictions.
The role requires:
- Complete independence in significantly complex programs where the business problem, solution, and risk strategy are undefined.
- Environmental engineering depth — specifically wastewater treatment chemistry, air emissions, and hazardous waste management — to credibly direct technical remediation and represent Amazon before regulators.
- Ability to navigate APAC three-tier regulatory framework and engage directly with regulators.
- Strategic direction and review of environmental operating permits, licenses, and authorizations across three countries.
- Leadership of continuous improvement initiatives to minimize environmental aspects and impacts, including implementation of Amazon's global environmental management systems.
Key job responsibilities
- Lead and execute multi-country environmental compliance across Japan, Australia, and Singapore — including wastewater discharge, air emissions, stormwater, waste management, and hazardous materials under applicable national, state/prefecture, and local regulations.
- Manage and execute business conformance with Amazon EAP Management Systems policies through effective execution of geo-specific operational environmental procedures, including internal systems adoption and regulatory reporting.
- Represent Amazon before regulatory authorities — including Japanese Prefectural governments, Australian Environmental Protection Authorities, and Singapore's National Environment Agency (NEA) — in permit applications, compliance reporting, and enforcement proceedings.
- Provide strategic environmental leadership for network growth.
- Direct technical remediation programs, including wastewater treatment plant operations, biological treatment system optimization, and capital expenditure authorization for environmental infrastructure.
- Lead ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification and recertification programs across the Australian portfolio.
- Develop and mentor a regional team (Japan Lead, AU/SG Lead, and supporting environmental specialists) across multiple time zones.
- Analyze environmental metrics and review weekly and monthly trends to determine where improvements are needed. Measure and analyze site performance against published requirements in environmental policies.
- Oversee work performed by relevant contractors, consultants, and third-party environmental service providers across three countries.
- Build collaborative relationships with operations leadership, legal counsel, and government relations teams to ensure environmental risks are identified early and managed proactively.
- Conduct risk assessments and environmental audits across the portfolio. Facilitate root cause analyses for all environmental incidents and recommend corrective actions for network implementation.
- Ensure compliance calendar, regulatory requirements, and Amazon program tasks are current across all three jurisdictions.
- Develop relevant environmental procedures as dictated by business and regulatory needs. Train site leadership and associates on their responsibilities under each policy.
- Travel up to 50% across Japan, Australia, and Singapore.
A day in the life
You own environmental compliance across Amazon's APAC operations - Japan, Australia, and Singapore. Your day moves between regulatory strategy and hands-on problem solving: engaging government authorities, guiding your regional team through permitting for new site launches, and partnering with operations leaders and legal counsel to manage environmental risk. You build systems and processes where none exist, balancing technical depth with strategic prioritization across three countries, three regulatory frameworks, and multiple time zones. No two days look the same, but every day connects back to keeping Amazon's growing network compliant and operational.
