About the Role:
An exciting opportunity exists for an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person who is empathetic, enthusiastic, and compassionate, to join our dynamic and evolving team. The successful applicant will be expected to provide high-quality customer service to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers as well as staff of CHS.
We are seeking an experienced Aboriginal Liaison Officer who will be based at North Canberra Hospital. There will be a requirement to travel to other locations, including Clare Holland House, to support operational need and to attend meetings and professional development.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison Service at North Canberra Hospital is responsible for supporting high quality, culturally safe care of Aboriginal patients and families across a range of critical and acute care areas of North Canberra Hospital and Clare Holland House. These include the medical and surgical inpatient wards, Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit, the emergency department, adult and older person mental health inpatient wards, maternity and special care nursery wards and a range of adult outpatient clinics.
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison Service (ALO Service) provides cultural, emotional and wellbeing support to patients and their family. They work closely with ALOs at other health services across the ACT and surrounding areas. The successful candidate will provide liaison and advocacy between patients, their families, staff and external organisations as appropriate. The successful candidate will work within a small team environment as well as participate in multidisciplinary teams.
This position will also participate in quality initiatives that enhance service delivery for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities both locally and southern NSW.
This role is responsible for establishing and embedding positive relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers, their families and community.
From 1st July 2026, North Canberra Hospital Aboriginal Liaison Officers (ALOs) will report to and be managed directly by the CHS Manager of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Hub. The successful candidate will continue to work within a small team environment as well as participate in multidisciplinary teams and will be expected to provide high-quality customer service to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers as well as staff of CHS.
Note: This is a designated position in accordance with s42, Discrimination Act 1991 and is only open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage is mandatory and therefore confirmation may be requested.
