Position Overview
The Retail Manager is responsible for planning, organising and managing the day-to-day operations of GOLD BEAN FOODSTOP. The position has overall responsibility for store performance, customer service, staffing, inventory management, purchasing, pricing, financial monitoring, merchandising, workplace safety and compliance.
The Retail Manager will determine appropriate product mix, stock levels and service standards while ensuring that store resources are effectively managed to meet customer demand and business objectives.
The position requires hands-on leadership and strong commercial awareness, with responsibility for supervising employees, monitoring financial and operational performance, maintaining stock availability and implementing strategies to improve sales, customer satisfaction and overall store efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
Store Operations & Performance
- Plan, organise and manage the daily operations of GOLD BEAN FOODSTOP to ensure efficient and commercially sustainable store performance.
- Establish and maintain appropriate customer service standards across all areas of the business.
- Determine the appropriate product mix and stock levels based on customer demand, sales trends, seasonal requirements and business objectives.
- Monitor sales, operating costs, labour requirements, stock movement and overall store performance.
- Develop and implement operational procedures designed to improve productivity, customer service and store efficiency.
- Coordinate staffing and workflow during busy trading periods to maintain effective service delivery.
- Make operational decisions regarding staffing, stock, merchandising, customer service and resource allocation.
- Ensure the store is appropriately presented, organised and maintained throughout trading hours.
Purchasing, Stock & Inventory Management
- Plan and manage purchasing requirements to maintain appropriate levels of food, beverages, groceries and other retail products.
- Liaise with suppliers regarding product availability, pricing, deliveries, quality and purchasing requirements.
- Monitor inventory levels and arrange replenishment to ensure sufficient stock is available to meet customer demand.
- Receive and inspect stock deliveries and ensure products are stored and displayed appropriately.
- Conduct regular stocktakes and maintain accurate inventory records.
- Monitor stock rotation, expiry dates, damaged products and wastage and implement appropriate measures to minimise stock losses.
- Review product performance and adjust purchasing and stock levels based on customer demand and sales results.
- Maintain appropriate controls to minimise inventory discrepancies, wastage and unnecessary operating costs.
Sales, Pricing & Merchandising
- Monitor sales performance and identify opportunities to improve revenue and profitability.
- Assist in establishing and reviewing product pricing in consideration of supplier costs, customer demand, competition and business objectives.
- Plan and implement product displays, merchandising arrangements and promotional activities.
- Determine appropriate placement and presentation of products to support customer convenience and sales performance.
- Develop and implement sales and promotional initiatives to attract customers and encourage repeat business.
- Monitor customer purchasing patterns and market trends to identify opportunities for new or improved product offerings.
- Support advertising and promotional activities for the store through appropriate local and digital channels.
Customer Service
- Maintain high standards of professional, efficient and courteous customer service.
- Sell goods to customers and provide information and assistance regarding available products where required.
- Monitor customer feedback and identify opportunities to improve products, services and the overall customer experience.
- Handle customer enquiries, complaints and service issues promptly and professionally.
- Ensure employees understand and consistently apply established customer service standards.
- Build positive relationships with regular customers and support customer retention through reliable service and product availability.
Staff Management & Leadership
- Recruit, select, train, roster, supervise and manage retail employees according to the operational requirements of the business.
- Allocate duties and responsibilities to employees and monitor completion of assigned tasks.
- Prepare staff rosters according to anticipated customer demand and operational requirements.
- Provide employees with appropriate training regarding customer service, store procedures, stock handling, point-of-sale operations and workplace safety.
- Monitor employee performance and provide guidance, coaching and feedback where required.
- Promote a professional, productive and collaborative workplace culture.
- Ensure appropriate staffing levels are maintained during trading periods.
- Support compliance with applicable workplace policies, employment requirements and organisational procedures.
Financial & Administrative Management
- Maintain and review records relating to sales, stock levels, purchases, expenses and other financial transactions.
- Assist with budgeting and monitor store expenditure against operational requirements.
- Review sales and financial information to assess store performance and identify areas requiring improvement.
- Monitor labour costs, supplier expenses, stock costs and other operating expenditure.
- Maintain accurate records relating to inventory, staffing, purchasing and operational activities.
- Ensure cash handling, point-of-sale and transaction procedures are followed accurately.
- Prepare operational and performance reports as required by management.
Compliance & Workplace Safety
- Ensure store operations comply with applicable workplace health and safety requirements and relevant government legislation.
- Maintain a safe environment for employees, customers, suppliers and visitors.
- Identify workplace hazards and implement appropriate corrective measures.
- Ensure employees follow safe work procedures and receive appropriate workplace safety instruction.
- Maintain appropriate standards of cleanliness, hygiene and organisation throughout the store.
- Ensure relevant company policies, operational procedures and regulatory requirements are consistently followed.
- Maintain required operational and compliance records and support inspections or reviews where necessary.
Skills & Experience
Essential Requirements
- Proven experience in retail management, convenience retail, grocery retail, food retail or a similar customer-focused environment.
- Demonstrated experience managing day-to-day retail store operations.
- Strong understanding of stock management, purchasing, merchandising, pricing and customer service.
- Experience supervising, rostering, training and coordinating retail employees.
- Ability to maintain and interpret stock, sales and financial transaction records.
- Strong commercial awareness and ability to monitor store performance and operating costs.
- Excellent organisational, leadership, communication and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple operational priorities within a fast-paced retail environment.
- Strong customer service skills and ability to professionally resolve customer concerns.
- Flexibility to work according to the operational and trading requirements of the business.
Preferred Qualifications
- AQF Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma or Diploma in Retail Management, Business, Management or a related field; or
- At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualification. In some instances, relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.
- Previous management experience within a convenience store, grocery store, mini mart, food retail or similar retail business will be highly regarded.
- Experience with point-of-sale, inventory management, rostering and retail reporting systems is desirable.
- Relevant food safety knowledge or certification will be highly regarded where applicable to the store's operations.
Work Environment
