The Royal Melbourne is one of Victoria’s largest hospitals providing a comprehensive range of health services including acute, sub-acute, general, and specialist medical services throughout inpatient and community-based facilities. We are also a proud part of the world-renowned Melbourne Biomedical Precinct, working in collaboration to advance research for continuous improvement of clinical care.
Unit Description:
The Thoracic Surgical Service performs over 600 cases per year with 5 dedicated operating sessions, 3 clinics & 2 MDMs weekly. The Service employs 4 specialist Thoracic Surgeons and is supported by a non-accredited Thoracic Surgery Registrar, resident staff and a Lung Liaison Nurse. Whilst the Service is part of the RMH Cardiothoracic Unit, the Thoracic Service operates independently with no requirement for the Fellow to participate in Cardiac Surgery. The Thoracic Surgery On-Call Roster is shared as a 1-in-3 with the Registrar.
About the role:
This position is a 12-month opportunity for a suitable candidate to train in advanced Thoracic Surgery with a focus on Minimally Invasive Thoracic techniques including Robotic Surgery. The role has a strong emphasis on Thoracic Surgical Oncology which is practiced in a busy and established Multi-Disciplinary Thoracic Cancer Tumour Stream. There is significant exposure to advanced imaging including CT and PET, Bronchoscopy with EBUS, Radiation and Medical Oncology and Pathology, and Information Technology platforms. Our other major emphasis is in Trauma Surgery with a well-established practice in Surgical Stabilisation of Rib Fractures.
About You:
Registration with the Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA) or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia (for international Medical Graduates)
Completed their Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons or equivalent for overseas applicants.
MBBS or equivalent tertiary qualifications
Ability to work in a team
Well-developed communication and presentation skills.
Fellows needing to complete their final examination hurdle can also be considered. This position will be offered up to full time hours depending on experience.
