Café René is looking for an experienced and confident Lead Barista to join our team.
We’re looking for someone who knows their way around a busy coffee machine, takes pride in producing consistently great coffee and is confident stepping up to lead and support the team during service.
This is a hands-on position. While coffee will be your primary focus, we need someone flexible who understands that great café service is a team effort. This means jumping in to run drinks, supporting front of house, keeping service flowing and helping the team wherever needed.
About the Role
As our Lead Barista, you will be responsible for maintaining the quality, consistency and efficiency of our coffee service while helping set the pace for the wider team.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Producing consistently high-quality coffee and beverages
- Confidently working on a commercial two-group espresso machine
- Maintaining excellent coffee extraction, milk texture and presentation
- Producing consistent latte art
- Managing the coffee station efficiently during busy service periods
- Leading by example and supporting the wider café team
- Helping train and develop less-experienced baristas where required
- Communicating effectively with front of house and kitchen
- Running drinks and assisting with general floor service when required
- Keeping on top of service and recognising where additional support is needed
- Maintaining a clean, organised and well-stocked coffee station
- Following food safety, hygiene and responsible service requirements
About You
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- Proven barista experience in a busy café environment
- Experience working confidently on a two-group commercial espresso machine
- Strong knowledge of coffee preparation and extraction
- Confidence preparing the full range of café coffees and beverages
- Strong and consistent latte art skills
- The confidence and experience to lead and support a team
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- The ability to remain calm, organised and efficient under pressure
- A positive, energetic and hands-on approach
- Flexibility to assist with running drinks, floor service and other café duties when required
- A strong team mentality and the initiative to recognise what needs doing
- Current RSA
- Current Food Handling Certificate
- Availability to work weekends as part of a rotating roster
- Reliability and punctuality
Hours & Pay
- 20–30 hours per week
- Possibility of additional hours for the right candidate
- Weekend work forms part of a rotating roster
- Award rates apply, based on the applicable classification and experience
