Primary objective
To provide the Northern Territory Government, its Authorities and Instrumentalities with high quality legal services with respect
to Litigation matters.
Context statement
The Litigation Division provides legal advice and representation in relation to a wide range of civil litigation, criminal, quasi-criminal
and administrative law matters to the Northern Territory Government, its agencies and statutory bodies. The Division is organised
into a number of discrete teams which include: Employment/Administrative Law, Commercial Litigation, Civil Claims and Personal
Injury, Criminal Enforcement, Child Protection and Community Services and Youth Claims.
This position is in the Youth Claims team. The Youth Claims team is tasked with providing the Departments of Children and Families
and Corrections with civil litigation support in respect to legal claims which may be brought by children or former children in care
or in detention. Members of the team will also be expected to provide legal advice to the Departments regarding relevant aspects
of their operations. Members of the team are expected to assist in other areas of the Litigation Division’s practice as directed.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide legal advice and legal representation on major, complex or sensitive matters and report to team leader and/or Director
of the Division on the progress of matters.
2. Act as a source of advice and guidance to junior staff of the Division.
3. Maintain a high level of knowledge of relevant areas of the law and of relevant practices and procedures.
4. Provide a high level of service to clients including preparation of court documentation, correspondence and other materials.
5. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing and prepare, and present legal concepts, positions or factual analyses clearly
and correctly.
6. Represent the Solicitor for the Northern Territory, liaise with clients and deal with people and issues in a professional manner.
7. Organise work to manage priorities effectively and meet deadlines.
8. Accept responsibility for the content and presentation of all documents produced.
9. Provide case management for complex and sensitive outsourced matters.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Admission as an Australian legal practitioner and eligibility to obtain a local practising certificate.
2. Significant experience in the practice of law in the relevant fields.
3. Well-developed understanding of the organisation and management of a personal legal practice involving major and complex
cases.
4. Ability to negotiate effectively and to communicate in a professional manner.
5. Ability to manage files to meet client needs and deadlines.
6. Ability to cope with pressure and to work as part of a team.
Desirable
1. A well-developed knowledge of the Territory, its laws, the workings of government and the development of legislation in a
practical way and experience in liaison with Ministerial and senior public service personnel.
2. Experience in a position involved with the supervision and development of junior professional staff.
3. Experience in advocacy, mediation and negotiation.
