Primary objective
Provide high-level technical and logistical support to the Regional Ecosystem and Landscape Mapping (REALM)
multidisciplinary team. The position is within the Land Resources Division, Department of Lands, Planning and Environment.
Context statement
The Flora and Fauna and Land Resources Divisions are jointly developing the REALM mapping program across the Northern
Territory. The mapping will integrate vegetation, soil and landscape information to develop uniform environmental mapping
for the Northern Territory.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Lead logistical planning and undertake fieldwork sometimes in remote areas for extended periods.
2. Ensure field equipment is maintained and available for safe operation including four-wheel drive vehicles, mechanical soil
coring rigs, communication and scientific measuring equipment.
3. As part of a multidisciplinary REALM program, work collaboratively and undertake fieldwork to collect a range of
landscape and vegetation field data, including safe operation of the soil rig.
4. Collate and secure soil and vegetation field data into corporate soil and vegetation databases.
5. As part of a team, manipulate field data with digital geographic information systems (GIS) to compile geodatabases and
prepare technical reports.
6. Communicate with government agencies, industry groups and other stakeholders to facilitate the work program.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated ability to plan, organise and undertake fieldwork in small teams.
2. An understanding of and/or experience in natural resource assessment techniques using methodologies established for
soil, land and vegetation characterisation.
3. Knowledge of and/or experience in using computer systems including Microsoft products and GIS software.
4. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally, with a range of people including scientific and
non-scientific and diverse cultural backgrounds.
5. Ability to work collaboratively in teams while working independently to deliver tasks responsibly and efficiently.
6. An ability and willingness to develop professionally in land resource assessment.
7. Current NT Driver’s Licence or equivalent and demonstrated ability to drive a manual, four-wheel drive vehicle.
Desirable
1. A relevant scientific or technical qualification from a recognised tertiary institution.
2. An interest in and knowledge of north Australian landscapes.
3. Ability to maintain and operate mechanical field equipment.
