Jigalong is an Aboriginal community located 170 kilometres east of Newman on the edge of The Great Sandy Desert. On the western side of the Rabbit Proof Fence, this is the Pilbara community which gained international recognition with the 2002 film of the same name. Jigalong Remote Community School (RCS) is a Kindergarten to Year 12 (K-12) school and part of the Remote Teaching Service. It is located just 2 hours drive east of Newman, where all essential services can be accessed. The school enjoys excellent relations with the Martu community.
Currently, the school has a team of 6 dedicated teachers, in addition to several Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers (AIEOs) and Education Assistants (EAs), a school officer, gardener, and a cook. Jigalong RCS has well-established routines and processes that facilitate a positive and safe environment for our students. Within the community of Jigalong, there are many service providers, including an excellent health clinic, a permanently staffed police station, a shop, a youth centre, and a ranger station. All teacher's houses are located in the same area, away from the centre of the community. It is a quiet and safe place to live.

The Role
We are seeking a passionate, motivated and skilled educator who is committed to improving literacy and numeracy outcomes for every child, every day. The successful applicant should ideally possess outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, enabling the development of positive and productive relationships with students, colleagues, parents and the wider community. We value educators who can create safe, supportive and predictable learning environments through the consistent implementation of classroom routines and whole-school expectations. The successful applicant will ideally understand the importance of structure and explicit instruction in maximising student engagement, behaviour and learning outcomes.
Schools in the Remote Teaching Service are located in some of the most isolated parts of the State. They may be in community settings or small towns, and the majority of students are from local Aboriginal families. They deliver flexible and innovative education programs to ensure students in remote areas have access to high quality learning programs.
Teaching in a remote school offers a range of professional opportunities for teachers who are engaging and resilient. If you are flexible and like working as part of a team you have the opportunity to be part of this innovative learning community. Skills and interests in literacy, numeracy and English as an additional language/dialect (EAL/D) are highly valued, in addition to experience teaching across a range of age groups.
Teachers who live and work in the remote teaching service tell us that it makes them better teachers, and better people. The Department of Education also supports our teachers by providing a range of additional allowances and benefits..
