About the role
Lead the day-to-day management of fleet operations and rostering to ensure the safe, efficient and reliable delivery of train services.
Based within the Integrated Operations Centre (IOC), this role oversees fleet allocation, availability and deployment, manages operational teams across metropolitan and regional locations, and works closely with key stakeholders to support service performance, maintenance activities and major infrastructure projects.
The position also plays a critical role in responding to operational disruptions, driving continuous improvement and implementing best-practice fleet management processes.
Key accountabilities include:
Providing leadership and operational oversight of the IOC Fleet Control team, Yard-coordinators and Fuellers at various regional locations.
Maintaining a collaborative, professional work environment, supporting the safe, effective, and efficient deployment of rolling stock across the V/Line passenger network.
Fostering a high-performance culture, aligned with safety, service, and compliance standards.
Ensuring effective fleet deployment and coordination during service disruptions, and maintaining operational readiness under pressure.
Monitoring and improving service performance by working with related stakeholders to implement improvement strategies.
Implementing continuous improvement initiatives to support V/Line’s long-term strategies
Location & Travel Considerations
An onsite operational position, main location is Bourke St, Melbourne however, managing up top 24 reports you can expect to travel regionally up to once a fortnight supporting your wider team. Locations of travel will cover Geelong, Waurn Ponds, Ballarat, Bendigo + Shepparton.
Fleet vehicle is available during work hours, however, please note this is not a personal working vehicle.
About you
This role is best suited to a collaborative and proactive leader with strong operational expertise, stakeholder management skills and a focus on safety, performance and continuous improvement. To be successful in this role, you will bring:
Experience in Frontline Management delivering in a complex, customer-focused operational environment.
Proven experience leading teams and managing strategic change within a large operational business.
Demonstrated experience in operational planning, resource allocation and service delivery.
Strong experience working within an industrial and/or unionised environment.
Experience within the rail industry or a similar safety-critical operational environment (desirable).
Our ideal candidate will possess the following:
Able and willing to commit to regular travel to regional locations
Current and valid Victorian Driver Licence
Demonstrated management experience within a complex operational environment
Demonstrated experience working within light rail and/ OR heavy rail operational environments
