Primary objective
Intensive care – Fellow position to fulfil clinical duties in relation to critical care in the Top End Health Service
Context statement
A 12-month fellowship, with clinical and non-clinical development opportunities, meets the CICM Transition Year (TY)
requirements. RDH ICU, with an annual admission rate of more than 1400 patients (adult and paediatric) is accredited for 12
months of ICU training and meets rural, paediatrics, trauma and neurosurgery CICM requirements. The successful applicant will
get exposure to tropical medicine as well as Aboriginal health. RDH ICU is an ECMO initiation site. Besides involvement in the
management of critically unwell patients in ICU, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to improve leadership and team
member skills by working in a multidisciplinary team in ICU. The fellow will receive governance, education, quality and safety
development opportunities.
Key duties and responsibilities
• Provide care and advice on the management of ICU patients, including admitting, managing and discharging patients with
gradual increasing independence and responsibilities under supervision of the ICU consultant.
- Provide leadership and supervision, on site and/or remotely via telephone to the onsite ICU registrar for deteriorating patients
in the outreach service as well as for ICU patients.
- Conduct regular inpatient ward rounds incorporating teaching to a multi-disciplinary team and provide an opinion/advice to
referring medical practitioners if requested.
- Promote and participate in recognised principles of clinical practice and case management.
- Supervise, manage and evaluate the work of subordinate ICU medical staff.
- Participate in continuous medical education including undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, professional development,
peer review, work partnership plans, research, teaching, quality improvement activities and clinical audits. The successful
candidate will be able to negotiate the focus these responsibilities based on their area of interest. Options include
Echocardiography, First Nations Health and Culture, Education, Safety and Quality. Other options can be discussed.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Unconditional medical registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.
2. Fulfilled all CICM requirements for the TY Fellowship.
3. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact positively in a cross-cultural work
environment.
4. Ability to work collaboratively and follow standardised clinical guidelines
5. An interest in and a commitment to improving Indigenous health.
6. Proven ability to manage self and others, monitor performance, manage change and develop policy.
