About the Role
As Chef at Jojayz Cafe, you will plan, organise, and oversee the preparation and cooking of our contemporary fusion menu. You will bring culinary creativity, kitchen leadership, and a passion for quality food to every service, ensuring our guests continue to enjoy the exceptional dining experience we are known for.
Salary for Chef: $80,000-$90,000
As a Cook at Jojayz Cafe, you will prepare, season, and cook a wide range of fresh food across our contemporary and fusion menu. Working alongside our Chef, you will play a key role in delivering the food quality and presentation that our guests love, in a busy, friendly café kitchen environment.
Salary for Cook: $75,000-$85,000
Key Duties & Responsibilities for Chef:
- Planning menus, estimating food and labour costs, and ordering food supplies
- Monitoring quality of dishes at all stages of preparation and presentation
- Discussing food preparation issues with managers and kitchen and waiting staff
- Demonstrating cooking techniques and advising on cooking procedures
- Preparing and cooking food across our contemporary fusion menu — including curries, grill items, burgers, and healthy café fare
- Explaining and enforcing food hygiene regulations and workplace safety standards
- Selecting and training kitchen staff as required
- Freezing and preserving foods in accordance with food safety standards
Key Duties & Responsibilities for Cook:
- Examining foodstuffs to ensure quality prior to preparation and cooking
- Regulating temperatures of ovens, grills, and other cooking equipment
- Preparing and cooking food using a range of methods including frying, grilling, braising, and steaming
- Seasoning food during cooking to achieve consistent flavour and quality
- Portioning food, plating, and adding sauces and garnishes to ensure dishes are well presented
- Preparing food to meet healthy and dietary requirements in line with the café's menu philosophy
- Storing food in temperature-controlled facilities in accordance with food safety standards
- Cleaning food preparation areas and equipment to maintain a hygienic kitchen environment
- Receiving and storing supplies as required
- Assisting the Chef with menu preparation and food requirements as directed
Requirements for Chef:
- AQF Associate Degree, Advanced Diploma or Diploma in Hospitality/Commercial Cookery (ANZSCO Skill Level 2)
- Proven experience of at least 1 year as a Chef in a café, restaurant, or fusion/contemporary dining environment
- Experience across a range of cuisines, with knowledge of South Asian or fusion cooking highly regarded
- Strong knowledge of food safety, hygiene standards, and kitchen compliance (Food Safety Supervisor Certificate preferred)
- Ability to lead, mentor, and develop kitchen staff
- Strong menu planning and food costing skills
- At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for formal qualifications
Requirements for Cook:
- AQF Certificate III in Commercial Cookery including at least two years of on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)
- Proven experience of at least 1 year as a Cook in a café, restaurant, or hospitality setting
- Experience cooking across contemporary, fusion, or multicultural menus, knowledge of South Asian cuisine highly regarded
- Sound knowledge of food safety and hygiene standards (Food Handler Certificate preferred)
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, team-oriented kitchen environment
- Strong attention to detail with a focus on food quality and presentation
- At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for formal qualifications
