Role Description:
We have an exciting opportunity for a Welding Technologist within our Surface Ship team in Osborne, SA.
Reporting to Materials Technology Lead, you will assist to design and develop all welding and allied processes, applications, systems in accordance with the contractual and company requirements to achieve the required business performance.
The key focus of the position is to support the development of the shipyards welding capability; including new technologies, techniques which provide improved efficiencies, weld quality and repeatability.
Based at Osborne Shipyard, this is a permanent full-time salaried role offering a 9-day fortnight. Note, due to the nature of the role, full-time on-site attendance is a requirement.
Core Duties:
- Review statutory, regulatory, project, and design requirements to ensure welding technical requirements are incorporated into welding procedures and documentation
- Utilise and support the management of welding systems, software, and business tools, identifying improvement opportunities to enhance manufacturing capability
- Identify and manage technical risk associated with welding design and execution and develop welding plans, manuals, sketches, matrix, control process and non-destructive testing plans for assigned activates
- Interface, coordinate and conduct pre-production meetings prior to manufacture with customer, classification societies, suppliers, sub-contractors, quality, and production personnel
- Conduct root cause analysis (RCA), review records and reports, investigate weld failures, and develop weld repair strategies. Liaise with production supervisors and operators to continuously improve welding operations
- Lead the development and management of comprehensive risk systems, including hazard identification, risk assessments, workplace inspections, and job safety analyses
About You
- Qualified through International Institute of Welding as an International Welding Specialist (IWS) or hold welding supervisor's certification to either AS 1796 or AS 2214
- Demonstrated industry experience related to materials, fabrication, welding, and inspection and testing
- Qualified through International Institute of Welding as an International Welding inspector (IWI-B or IWI-S) or hold welding inspection certification to another regulatory body (eg CSWIP)
- Experienced in the use of automated, mechanised, orbital and robotic welding equipment that requires equipment to be pre-programmed
- Experience in developing welding procedure in compliance with design requirements, contractual documentation, project specifications and standards
- Knowledge and practical experience with NDT requirements, methods and implementation
- Demonstrated good communication skills with ability to interact effectively with colleagues within and outside the immediate team with a strong commitment to safe work practices
- Basic understanding the principles and criteria of engineering design, more specifically experience in the application/qualification of weld procedures for static and fatigue design
