About the Role
As a Pest Management Officer, you will work under general direction to implement Council's pest and biosecurity programs, focusing on the control of invasive plants and animals and promoting best-practice biosecurity outcomes throughout the region.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Controlling environmental weeds and invasive biosecurity matter in accordance with legislation and Council's Pest Management Plan.
- Conducting inspections and assessments relating to biosecurity risks.
- Delivering educational presentations, demonstrations, and community awareness activities.
- Building positive relationships with landholders, community groups, government agencies, and other stakeholders.
- Monitoring worksites and ensuring safe, effective, and efficient use of plant and equipment.
- Assisting in the planning and delivery of pest management programsacross the Mackay Regional Council area.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
Essential Requirements
- Ability to undertake and pass a Criminal History Check.
- Agricultural Chemicals Distribution Control (ACDC) / Herbicide Licence.
- Appropriate poisons licences and shooting licences for pest animal control, or the ability to obtain these within six months of commencement.
- Current Queensland "C" Class Driver Licence (or ability to transfer an interstate equivalent within three months).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to build productive relationships with farmers, property owners, community groups, colleagues, and stakeholders.
- Sound conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Competent computer skills.
- Knowledge of environmental weeds, invasive biosecurity matter, and available control methods.
- Understanding of herbicide and pesticide impacts on the environment and safe application practices.
Desirable
- Previous experience in pest management, biosecurity, natural resource management, environmental management, or a related field.
- Understanding of risk management principles within a local government environment.
