About the Team
This position is Monday to Friday, offering a stable work pattern while allowing you to collaborate with a dedicated team of coding professionals working toward shared outcomes. While much of the work may be completed independently, you will remain closely connected to a supportive and collaborative coding team.
Our main coding team is based within the Maitland Hospital which is a contemporary, purpose-built health facility in the heart of the Hunter region, designed to support exceptional patient care and a positive staff experience. Located within the welcoming community of Maitland and just a short drive from Newcastle, it offers the perfect balance of modern healthcare infrastructure, a connected team environment, and a relaxed regional lifestyle.
Our Coding Team is responsible for supporting a diverse and dynamic case mix across Maitland, Kurri Kurri, and Cessnock Hospitals. This is a unique opportunity to work across acute, subacute, rehabilitation, and maternity services, building broad expertise while contributing to high-quality patient data and health outcomes.
About the Role
To provide ethical and timely accurate coding of inpatient episodes of care using current version of ICD-10-AM classification system in accordance with the Australian Coding Standards and other relevant National/State coding decisions. Contribute to the support of the coding functions and coding staff.
About You
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Clinical Coding professional with a strong foundation in ICD-10-AM/ACHI classification and a commitment to excellence in health data quality. The ideal candidate will:
Demonstrate the ability to accurately interpret complex clinical documentation and deliver timely, compliant coding outcomes that support patient care, reporting, and funding integrity.
Be an effective communicator who can confidently engage with clinicians to clarify diagnoses and procedures, contributing to improved documentation and coding accuracy.
Have well-developed communication skills
Consistently manage competing priorities while meeting productivity and quality KPIs.
Bring a proactive approach to continuous learning and quality improvement, actively participating in audits, education, and process enhancements.
At more senior levels, they will demonstrate leadership capability through mentoring, supporting team members, and contributing to the coordination of coding functions
Requirements
AO5 (Administration Level 5) - Successful completion of a recognised ICD10-AM & ACHI and Australian Coding Standards coding qualification
HSM1 - Successful completion of a recognised clinical coding course at an Advanced level or extensive experience across a broad range of specialties or relevant tertiary qualification in Health Information Management.

Kurri Kurri - rehabilitation and subacute-focused, longer stay, lower acuity, day surgery
Cessnock - low-complexity acute + subacute mix, strong in general medicine, day surgery, dental surgery and ageing population
What you'll be doing
Accurate translation of narrative descriptions of diseases, injuries and procedures into alphanumeric codes using the current version of ICD-10 and the correct assignment of the DRG within the NSW Health and Local Health District timeframes.
