Facilities & Maintenance Officer – Hands-On Role
Employment Type: Full-Time
Position: Facilities & Maintenance Officer
About the Role
We are seeking a practical and reliable Facilities & Maintenance Officer to take responsibility for the day-to-day upkeep and maintenance of our facility and surrounding premises.
This is a highly hands-on role, with approximately 90% of your time spent completing maintenance and facility-related tasks yourself. You will also coordinate external contractors where specialist work is required, negotiate competitive pricing with suppliers and service providers, and ensure the overall site is maintained to a high standard.
The property also includes a heritage house located on the premises, which requires ongoing care, general maintenance and coordination of appropriate repairs while maintaining the character and condition of the building.
This role would suit someone with a strong maintenance, handyman, facilities, trades assistant or property maintenance background who enjoys variety and taking ownership of a site.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out general maintenance and repairs across the facility and surrounding premises
- Perform minor repairs, basic carpentry, patching, painting and general handyman duties
- Identify maintenance issues and complete repairs where possible
- Coordinate and book external contractors for specialist maintenance and repair work
- Obtain and compare quotes from contractors and service providers
- Negotiate pricing and service agreements to achieve better value for the business
- Manage preventative and scheduled maintenance requirements
- Maintain the heritage house located on the property and coordinate specialist works when required
- Conduct regular inspections of buildings, equipment and surrounding areas
- Assist with minor plumbing, electrical or mechanical maintenance within your level of competency
- Coordinate servicing of equipment and facility infrastructure
- Maintain maintenance records, contractor details and service schedules
- Ensure contractors comply with site safety requirements
- Assist with general grounds and property maintenance as required
- Potentially complete electrical test and tagging of equipment
- Candidates with an existing Test & Tag qualification are highly regarded; however, training may be provided for the right person who is willing to obtain the required qualification
About You
We are looking for someone who is genuinely comfortable working with their hands and solving problems rather than spending most of the day behind a desk.
Ideally, you will have:
- Previous experience in facilities maintenance, property maintenance, handyman work, trades assistance or a similar hands-on role
- Strong general maintenance and practical repair skills
- Confidence using hand and power tools
- Ability to identify maintenance problems and determine whether they can be repaired internally or require a contractor
- Experience coordinating contractors and maintenance service providers
- Confidence obtaining quotes and negotiating pricing
- Good communication and organisational skills
- Ability to work independently and prioritise maintenance requirements
- Strong attention to detail and pride in maintaining a well-presented facility
- A proactive approach to preventative maintenance
- Current driver's licence
- Test & Tag qualification highly regarded, or willingness to obtain one
A trade background such as carpentry, mechanical fitting, electrical, plumbing, building maintenance or general construction would be advantageous but is not essential.
What We’re Looking For
This is not a traditional office-based Facilities Officer position. We are looking for someone who is:
- Hands-on and practical
- Comfortable getting involved in repairs and maintenance
- Resourceful and able to troubleshoot problems
- Commercially minded when dealing with contractors
- Able to negotiate better pricing rather than simply accepting the first quote
- Reliable and able to take ownership of the overall condition of the property
- Respectful of the additional care required when maintaining a heritage building
What’s on Offer
- Full-time, stable position
- Varied role with plenty of hands-on work
- Opportunity to take ownership of the maintenance of an entire facility
- Combination of practical maintenance and contractor coordination
- Opportunity to develop additional skills and qualifications, including Test & Tag
- Long-term opportunity for the right person
