About the Nomination Panel
The Nomination Panel for Appointments to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and Special Broadcasting Service (SBS) boards oversees merit-based selection processes to fill vacancies on the boards of the ABC and SBS and recommends candidates for appointment by the Government. The Nomination Panel is independent and not subject to direction by the Government.
The Nomination Panel was established in 2008 under the
Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act 1983 (the ABC Act) and is referenced in the
Special Broadcasting Services Act 1991 (the SBS Act).
The Nomination Panel consists of a Chair and at least two, but no more than three, members and has a quorum of three. Members of the Nomination Panel are appointed on a part-time basis for a period of three years. The Nomination Panel is supported by a secretariat in the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts (DITRDCSA).
What you will do
As vacancies on the boards of the ABC and the SBS arise, the Minister for Communications asks the Nomination Panel to conduct a merit-based selection process to identify potential appointees in accordance with the ABC and SBS Acts. The Nomination Panel assesses all applicants on merit against the relevant selection criteria. The Nomination Panel prepares a written report to the Minister (and the Prime Minister, if the appointment is for the Chairperson of the ABC) on the outcome of the selection process, with a comparative assessment of at least three candidates nominated for the appointment.
More information about the merit-based selection process for the ABC and SBS boards can be found here.
Meetings of the Nomination Panel are held in Sydney or virtually.
