They play an important role in supervising patrons, identifying and responding to potential risks and always delivering exceptional customer service.
Who can become a lifeguard?
Anyone can apply – no prior experience required!
To be eligible, you must
- Be at least 16 years of age
- Be an Australian or New Zealand Citizen or hold an appropriate visa that allows you to work and undertake training in Australia.

Buloke Shire will support the training costs for applicants to obtain all the relevant qualifications and checks needed to become a lifeguard.
Check out the table below to see what training is needed and what will be reimbursed. Please note costs will not be reimbursed until you are employed and have worked a minimum of two shifts at a Buloke Shire Swimming Pool.

Who is this role suited for?
This role is suited for students, parents, seasonal workers or anyone looking for flexible active work. It is a great opportunity to earn extra income and gain valuable skills in a rewarding community focused role.
When is the pool season?
The pool season runs from mid-November to March
Do I need to be available to work every day?
No. We offer flexible working hours typically ranging from 10 – 30 hours per week across mornings, evenings, weekends and additional out of hours booking times. This flexibility allows you to balance work with school, study as well as family and childcare commitments so you can work in a way that suits your lifestyle.
Do I need to work for the full pool season?
No. We understand that availability can vary and not everyone is able to commit to the full pool season. Many of our lifeguard's work only during specific periods such as school holidays or post-harvest, while others may only be available for part of the season due to travel, study or other commitments. We aim to offer flexible opportunities and will work with you to match shifts to your availability.
What are the pay rates?
All lifeguard roles are classified as Band 2, in accordance with the Buloke Shire Council Enterprise Agreement.
Will I be working across multiple locations?
Buloke Shire operates 7 seasonal outdoor pools across Charlton, Donald, Wycheproof, Birchip, Watchem, Berriwillock and Sea Lake.
You will primarily be based at your local (closest) Buloke Shire pool. However, there may be opportunities to work across other Buloke Shire Pools, depending on your availability and operational requirements.
Do I need all my qualifications before applying?
Not necessarily. We encourage prospective applicants to begin completing their qualifications and required checks as soon as possible, however you can still apply without them. Buloke Shire will support and guide you through the process of becoming fully qualified.
