About the role:
This position is designed for a motivated solicitor with established exposure to the criminal jurisdiction, or one seeking to consolidate an existing criminal practice skill base. The successful applicant will primarily undertake specialised legal work, such as responding to complex file requests and subpoenas and assisting their Trial Division counterparts on specialised issues like Mutual Assistance Requests and Criminal Justice Visas. The successful applicant will also contribute to the OPPedia knowledge management platform and have conduct of prosecutions under the Serious Offenders Act.
You will:
- Process sensitive and complex file requests and subpoenas.
- Work effectively with colleagues and liaise with other government bodies to expeditiously progress Mutual Assistance Requests and applications for criminal justice certificates and visas.
- Contribute to the collaborative and ongoing project of the OPPedia knowledge management platform, drafting and building content.
- Prepare and instruct in County Court and Supreme Court prosecutions for breach of Serious Offender Supervision Orders, including mentions, plea hearings and contests.
- Be responsible for managing different streams of work, competently and efficiently.
What we are looking for:
- Legal Expertise: Foundational knowledge of Criminal Law and Procedure, the Law of Evidence, and relevant statutory frameworks.
- Research & Communication: Ability to conduct thorough legal research and draft clear, precise, and objective written communications for professional and legal audiences.
- Casework Capability: Ability to prepare prosecutions of moderate complexity in the Supreme and County Courts, including breach proceedings under the Serious Offenders Act 2018.
- Interpersonal Skills: High-level communication skills, with the capacity to liaise professionally and empathetically with stakeholders, including OPP staff, Crown Prosecutors, victims, witnesses, police, counsel, and members of the public.
- Time Management: Well-developed organizational skills, with the ability to identify priorities and manage concurrent demands under tight, court-mandated timeframes.
