This position will provide an opportunity for PGY3s and above, interested in Orthopaedic Surgery, to undertake up to 12 months experience in Orthopaedics in preparation for undertaking an accredited training program. The Orthopaedic SRMO will gain experience in general orthopaedics, trauma and advanced joint replacement. The position involves employment at St. Vincent’s Campus. The SRMO will work under a team of Consultants with 2 accredited AOA Trainees and an Unaccredited Trainee. The successful applicant usually has some orthopaedic experience at PGY1 and 2 level and is in interested in a career in orthopaedic surgery.
Major challenges for the SRMO include:
- Balancing mandated training and education requirements with service provision, within the limitations of a busy health network.
- Maintaining a professional role and responsibility for patient care, in close liaison with supervising consultants.
- Working collaboratively with other staff in a multi-disciplinary team.
- Maximising the efficient utilisation of the physical resources of the Local Health Network.
- Responsibility for supervision and teaching of more junior medical staff attached to the department.
- Balancing of the operative surgical load and clinical research
- Attending conferences and training sessions
- Attending in hospital weekly training session.
The SRMO is responsible for working with the Orthopaedic team for assessment and management of patients with a problem requiring specialised Orthopaedic surgery treatment at St. Vincent’s Hospital. This will be under the supervision of the Consultant responsible for the care of such patients. The SRMO will be responsible for the communication of assessment and management decisions to other staff involved in the patient’s care; communication with the patient / family regarding the patient’s condition and management plans; maintenance of accurate and relevant patient documentation; coordination of diagnostic tests and consultations; assisting with any necessary operative procedures required for the care and treatment of such patients and arrangement of patient admission and discharge procedures. The SRMO will attend Outpatient Clinics of the Department. The responsibilities of SRMOs include assistance in surgery, inpatient care management, attendance at outpatient clinics and supervision of Junior Medical officers.
