What you'll be doing
To allow Trainees to complete the requirements of training for Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, as specified in the College training program, whilst providing anaesthetic care to patients under the supervision of a nominated Consultant. This position allows for the development of skills required for independent practice in anaesthesia, exposure to one or more areas of anaesthesia subspecialty practice according to Trainee interest, as well as the opportunity to undertake non-clinical sessions for research, with an expectation of significant academic accomplishment in the 12 month appointment.

All decision-making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the medical officer's skills, knowledge, and experience. The Trainee will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance and at the discretion of a supervising Consultant. All patients managed within SLHD are under the direct care of a Specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding their care should be clearly communicated with the Specialist responsible.

It is expected that the Trainee will achieve the following during their year in this fellowship position:

To gain skills in the pre-operative assessment and preparation of patients for surgery.
To gain experience in the organisation and coordination of emergency cases requiring surgery, and for providing anaesthesia in out-of-theatre locations.
To gain experience in a more independent style of anaesthetic practice by taking clinical responsibility commensurate with experience.
To obtain further specialised experience in an anaesthesia sub-specialty of the Trainee's choice.
To participate in after-hours rosters including the Liver Transplant and Obstetrics rosters.
To fulfil the educational and training requirements for trainees as a Provisional Fellow or for trainees in ATY2E (as specified by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists).
Participation in Medical Officer & Departmental teaching sessions.
To learn good presentation skills through education and research presentations and QA activities such as morbidity/mortality reviews and critical incident reports.
To learn basic research principles and contribute significantly to a research project over 12 months with aims to achieve a higher research qualification and/or publication with presentation of scientific results at a national meeting.
To gain experience in providing support for junior colleagues and peers.

MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.

Ability to work collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams, in the planning, delivery and coordination of patient care.

Adept verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to vary communication style in line with the understanding of the needs of diverse audiences. And ability to priorities workloads and display a flexible approach to meet changing situations in a demanding and unpredictable clinical environment.

Commitment to participating in training and development opportunities to further develop skills and knowledge in the area of anaesthesia.

Demonstrated previous experience in, and willingness to deliver, undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training and commitment to after-hours and on-call rosters.

Commitment to a research project over the 12 month period under the supervision of Prof Sanders.

Evidence of prior publications in peer reviewed journals and/or higher research degrees (including MSc, MPhil or PhD) and/or formal training in analytics (for example, statistics).
