Primary objective
To provide general laboratory maintenance and administrative support relating to the examination of evidence for the presence of alcohol
and drugs.
Context statement
The Forensic Chemistry Unit (FCU), Forensic Science Branch, Northern Territory Police Force provides analytical chemistry services to
meet the needs of the Northern Territory Justice System.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide administrative support including managing communications, maintaining accurate records and documentation, coordinating
schedules, performing data entry and invoicing, and supporting daily operational and business functions within a professional and
confidential environment.
2. Provide support to scientific staff through assistance with laboratory tasks including scheduling maintenance and calibrations of
instruments, general cleaning and maintenance of laboratories.
3. Maintain office and laboratory consumables, including liaising with suppliers for orders and purchasing ensuring compliance with
Northern Territory Government Procurement Framework.
4. Support laboratory Workplace Health and Safety by maintaining safety and first aid equipment and ensuring appropriate disposal of
chemical and biological hazardous materials.
5. Adhere and maintain to ISO/IEC 17025 and National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) forensic accreditation requirements.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. High quality customer service experience, including good interpersonal and communications skills, both oral and written with
demonstrated ability to interact effectively with people of diverse cultures.
2. Good level of computer literacy skills, with proven ability using information technology systems, including word processing,
spreadsheets, email applications, mainframe systems and data entry.
3. High-level of organisation skills, including the ability to handle multiple concurrent tasks.
4. Proven ability to work autonomously and as part of a team environment, ensuring the completion of tasks within strict deadlines,
adherence to laboratory procedures and quality guidelines.
5. Ability to adapt to changes in workflows and advancing technologies whilst maintaining a quality service.
6. A demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and impartiality, to the level of Northern Territory Government policies and ISO/IEC
17025 quality standard accreditation.
7. Sound knowledge of the principles of Equity and Diversity and Workplace Health and Safety.
Desirable
1. Diploma in Laboratory Techniques (or equivalent).
2. Experience working in an ISO/IEC 17025 quality standard accredited laboratory.
3. Experience with procurement and a working knowledge of the Northern Territory Government Procurement Framework.
Further information
1. Responsibilities may occasionally require an adjusted work schedule, overtime, and evening/weekend hours to meet the operational
requirements of the FCU.
2. The successful applicant must have no significant criminal record confirmed by a Police criminal history check and provide DNA and
fingerprint samples for comparison and retention.
3. The work of the FCU can be confronting and there is high risk of exposure to distressing material and information. The psychological
wellbeing of all members of the FCU is a priority and as such, members are subject to annual Well Checks. The applicant must be suited
to work in an area where there is an expectation and willingness to seek, engage and accept help with psychological services.
