DETSI is seeking to appoint a Principal Environmental Officer aligned to the Minerals Business Centre, Environmental Services and Regulation (ESR). This role is responsible in undertaking statutory assessments functions for mineral and downstream mining projects across Queensland.
Assessment functions under the Environmental Protection Act 1994 include assessing applications relating to environmental authorities, progressive rehabilitation and closure plans, and estimated rehabilitation costs.
Additional duties include but not limited to; participation in stakeholder meetings and/or reactive investigations across regional and remote locations in North Queensland, provide expert advice, guidance and direction to less experienced staff, managing assigned technically complex and contentious matters, represent ESR in technically complex stakeholder and customer negotiations, preparation of advice, briefs, ministerial and executive correspondence, submissions, publications and other correspondence on environmental management issues.
Assessments are conducted through proactive site inspections and overnight travel may be required. This includes travel to active mine sites, industrial locations and other departmental offices across the State.
A mandatory requirement of this position is that you must hold a university degree (undergraduate and/or postgraduate) from a recognised tertiary institution in one of
the following disciplines: geology or geochemistry.
