Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre is seeking a Casual Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer (AHLO) to provide support during periods of leave and increased service demand within our Aboriginal Health Unit.
In this important role, you will advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and families, support communication between patients and healthcare teams, contribute to culturally appropriate care planning, and help connect people with community-based supports and services. You will work closely with nursing, medical and allied health teams across Peter Mac to improve patient experiences and outcomes.

About You
You will:
Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and be accepted by the Victorian Aboriginal Community.
Have a strong understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, communities and kinship networks.
Demonstrate experience working in Aboriginal health, community services, primary care, welfare or a related field.
Have an understanding of Aboriginal health priorities, issues and initiatives.
Be an effective advocate with excellent communication, relationship-building and interpersonal skills.
Demonstrate strong organisational, administrative and problem-solving abilities.
Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to support culturally safe and accessible healthcare.
Applicants with a Certificate IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care (or equivalent) will be highly regarded, as will those with experience working within a public hospital or large healthcare setting.

Position Summary
The Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer (AHLO) plays a vital role in ensuring culturally safe, respectful, and person-centred care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, carers, and families accessing services at Peter Mac. As an advocate and cultural resource, the AHLO works in partnership with multidisciplinary teams to support the delivery of care that respects and responds to the cultural, spiritual, and social needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. This includes facilitating communication between patients and health professionals, participating in discharge planning, and connecting patients with culturally appropriate community services to ensure continuity of care beyond Peter Mac.
The AHLO also contributes to broader organisational efforts in cultural safety, equity, and community engagement. This includes active participation in committees such as the Reconciliation Action Plan Committee, input into policies and quality improvement initiatives, and the development of strong relationships with Aboriginal community-controlled organisations and health providers. With a deep understanding of Aboriginal culture, kinship, and health issues, the AHLO plays a key role in embedding cultural understanding across the health service and improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.

Essential
A person who is of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and accepted by the Victorian Aboriginal community
Have a sound knowledge and understanding of First Nations culture, society, and kinship networks.
Demonstrated knowledge of experience in and commitment to the provision of First Nations health services in a mainstream health, primary care, or welfare sectors
An understanding of state and local Aboriginal health issues and initiatives
Demonstrated high level organisational and administrative skills and an ability to work effectively with others
Well-developed interpersonal, oral, and written health communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain strong links across the acute health and emergency care sector as well as community and government providers

Key Accountabilities
1.Advocacy and Cultural Expertise
Advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their carers as part of a multi-disciplinary healthcare team.
Act as a resource in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural and health issues, responses, and services.
Develop and maintain strong positive relationships with the Aboriginal Community, Aboriginal organisations, and community providers.
Develop strong internal networks and relationships to improve the delivery of care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients within and external to the organisation, including participation in relevant meetings.
Participate as an active member in Reconciliation Action Plan Committee and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advisory Committee.
Contribute to policies and projects, including quality improvement activities as require
2.Quality Patient CareWork in partnership with patients, carers and families to ensure high-quality, culturally appropriate care.
Contribute to multidisciplinary discussions, family meetings and rounds for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.
Supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patient participation in clinical trials/research.
Collaborate with clinical teams on culturally appropriate discharge planning for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.
Ensure timely documentation of and communication with the multi-disciplinary team of any cultural consideration and supports for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients.
Facilitate referrals to community-based Aboriginal health services.

Participate in supervision from more senior staff members and engage in Individual Development, Work Planning, and Annual Discussions.
Continue to learn through mandatory training and other learning activities to maintain professional growth.
Seek feedback on your work, including participation in annual performance discussions.
Work collaboratively with colleagues across Peter Mac to ensure comprehensive, integrated patient care.
