We are looking for a Senior Hydrographic Surveyor (CPHS Level 1) to join our APAC Solutions business unit in Hobart, Tasmania. This role provides technical leadership for Ocean Infinity survey projects from planning and mobilisation through to data acquisition, processing, reporting, demobilisation and final client delivery.
As Surveyor in Charge, you will act as OI’s technical representative to the client and be accountable for the overall conduct of assigned survey projects. The role is suited to an experienced hydrographic survey professional who can translate client requirements, project specifications and survey standards into practical survey plans, robust QA/QC controls and high-quality deliverables.
What you will be doing

Leading projects as Surveyor in Charge, taking responsibility for the overall conduct of survey projects, including acquisition, processing, reporting and final deliverables.

Leading survey planning, methodology development and technical execution by interpreting contract specifications, survey standards and client requirements, including to support the development of tender documentation

Overseeing the selection, mobilisation, calibration and deployment of survey equipment and software, including MBES, GNSS, tide gauges, sound velocity sensors, current meters and related survey systems.

Developing and implementing horizontal and vertical control solutions, including geodetic control, positioning strategies, tidal reductions and vertical datum approaches.

Overseeing field data acquisition, field processing, data checks and QA/QC systems to ensure completeness, consistency, accuracy and compliance before submission.

Leading routine and ad hoc technical reporting to keep Project Managers, clients and stakeholders informed on progress, data quality, technical issues, risks and deliverable status.

Applying a strong understanding of survey uncertainty, project error budgets and data quality standards to assess survey results, support technical decision-making, and make clear statements on achieved survey order and confidence in final deliverables.

Validating survey deliverables and overseeing the production of preliminary and final client outputs, including surfaces, charts, reports of survey and other technical deliverables.

Leading safe field operations by promoting proactive risk management, supporting toolbox talks and hazard discussions, maintaining compliance with the Safety Management System, and exercising stop-work authority where required to protect personnel, assets and the environment.

Coaching and developing future Hydrographic Surveyors, sharing technical knowledge, embedding lessons learned and driving continuous improvement across survey workflows.

Certified Professional Hydrographic Surveyor Level 1, or an experienced surveyor with a clear pathway to CPHS Level 1 (FIG Cat A preferred).

Experienced hydrographic survey professional with the confidence to lead complex survey projects from planning through to final client acceptance.

Strong technical understanding of hydrographic survey methods, geodetic control, tidal and vertical datum solutions, MBES acquisition, field processing, QA/QC and client deliverable requirements.

Clear communicator able to brief project teams, vessel personnel, clients and stakeholders on technical requirements, data quality, risks and delivery status.

Safety-focused leader who supports the Safety Management System, promotes safe work practices and has the confidence to stop or suspend unsafe operations.

Organised and decisive, with the ability to manage competing project demands, maintain technical assurance and support timely delivery in dynamic field environments.

Committed to developing others through supervision, mentoring, competency development and continuous improvement of survey planning, acquisition, processing, reporting and data quality practices.

Experience with seabed, feature and data interpretation to support client acceptance, charting decisions and final deliverable quality.

Marine or offshore safety training such as BOSIET, sea survival, first aid, HUET or equivalent certifications.

Experience operating autonomous survey vehicles and autonomous underwater vehicles in the collection of hydrographic data.

Salary: The salary varies for this position as we are recruiting in multiple regional locations and job grades. The salary process is based on skills, abilities, and experience required.
