Melbourne Pathology is one of Victoria’s largest diagnostic pathology laboratories, committed to providing high quality healthcare throughout metropolitan Melbourne, regional Victoria and interstate.
An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced Grade 2 or 3 – Genetic Scientist to join our expanding laboratory services at the Department of Molecular Genetics and Genomics.
The successful candidate will be highly motivated and self-driven, with suitable molecular genetics skills and experience. They will be involved in all aspects of molecular genetics testing. This position features a primary role in Reproductive Carrier Screening, in addition to developing new methodologies and performing various established molecular tests, as required. The role involves sample preparation, performing and validating assays, analysis and interpretation of results, and reporting.
Position requirements:
- BSc, BSc(Hons), BAppSc, BMedSci (Genetics major preferred), or equivalent. A Masters in Genomic Diagnostics, MHGSA or FHGSA/FFSc will be well-regarded. A minimum of 5 years full-time employment at a NATA-accredited clinical laboratory.
- Demonstrated knowledge and competency in a wide range of molecular genetics or genomics techniques.
- Demonstrated experience in the evaluation, initiation and development of new applicable laboratory procedures.
- Performing genetic and genomic assays as required and directed.
- Preparation of documents and maintaining protocols in adherence to NATA/NPAAC/ISO requirements.
- Knowledge and experience in secondary and tertiary analysis platforms is desirable.
- Proven ability in genetic analysis and clinical reporting.
- Commitment to continuing education and advancement of new technologies relevant to laboratory processes.
- Overseeing the training and competency assessment of laboratory staff.
- Participation in areas of continuous improvement, including quality and laboratory processes.
- Ability to troubleshoot and provide expert advice in laboratory procedures and results analysis.
- Maintain and supervise maintenance of laboratory equipment, in addition to managing stock levels.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
- Impeccable attention to detail and degree of accuracy.
- Effective communication and writing skills.
This is a full-time position (38 hours per week), Monday to Friday on an initial 12 month contract.
