Inpatient diabetes elective position: This position is in inpatient diabetes management. The position has a research component and involves education of staff in various disciplines, especially nurses and doctors, and patients and carers. It also involves both development and implementation of protocols and guidelines for in-hospital glycaemic management. The advanced trainee is supervised by the on-call endocrinology consultant (one of 11 endocrinologists), with assistance from the Diabetes Service Nurse Practitioner and the inpatient diabetes educators.
This advanced trainee (AT) attends a fortnightly diabetes clinic for young people, alternating with a fortnightly general endocrine clinic, and attends other outpatient clinics on an ad hoc basis, particularly when other advanced trainees are on leave.
The trainee participates in the endocrinology general medicine roster for the hospital, in addition to the endocrinology weekend ward round roster (1 in 6 currently).
The Elective diabetes inpatient AT acts as part of the endocrinology team with four other ATs, and participates with the other ATs in departmental teaching, administrative and academic meetings. There is a strong clinical education program, with regular twice or thrice weekly meetings, including Clinical Cases, AT tutorials, Endocrine Grand Rounds, Journal Clubs, M&M, Radiology, Histopathology, Multidisciplinary Thyroid Cancer & Pituitary/Adrenal meetings, Clinical Guideline Meetings and Medical Grand Rounds.
What you'll be doing
- Under supervision, provide a high standard of clinical care to patients in the area of Endocrinology to uphold quality service delivery whilst building on skills to become competent in the practice of Endocrinology in accordance with RACP advanced training requirements.
- Co-ordinating the admission, management and discharge planning of patients seen in or admitted under the care of the Endocrinology service.
- Assess, investigate, diagnose, treat and provide ongoing management of in and outpatients with endocrine disorders.
- Undertake procedures relevant to the discipline of Endocrinology medicine including intravenous cannulation, insertion of nasogastric tubes, indwelling urinary catheters, arterial blood gas collection, dynamic endocrine testing (as appropriate). Performance of thyroid biopsies (as appropriate).
