We are seeking an experienced and technically capable Mechatronics Engineer to join our engineering team and contribute to the design, integration, testing and deployment of advanced automated systems.
About the Role
The Mechatronics Engineer will be responsible for supporting the development of robotic and intelligent automation systems, combining mechanical engineering, electronics, robotics, control systems, embedded technologies and software.
The successful candidate will work on robotic systems from concept and prototyping through to integration, testing, commissioning and deployment. The role will involve hands-on engineering and close collaboration with software, AI and other engineering specialists.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Designing, developing and integrating robotic and automated mechatronic systems.
- Supporting the development of robotic platforms for laboratory, industrial and other advanced automation applications.
- Integrating robotic arms, actuators, motors, sensors, cameras and other robotic components into complete systems.
- Designing and developing mechanical and electronic interfaces for robotic systems.
- Configuring and integrating robotic hardware with control software and edge-computing platforms.
- Developing and testing robotic control systems and automated workflows.
- Programming and configuring robotic systems using Python, C and/or C++.
- Working with robotics frameworks and middleware, including ROS/ROS2 where applicable.
- Developing interfaces between robots, sensors, cameras, controllers and other connected devices.
- Integrating sensors and vision systems for robotic perception, detection, identification and automated handling.
- Supporting the implementation of computer vision and AI technologies within robotic applications.
- Developing real-time data-processing and control functions for robotic systems.
- Configuring communications between robotic equipment, sensors, controllers, edge platforms and software systems.
- Working with communication protocols such as Serial, CAN, Modbus, Ethernet, MQTT or similar.
- Building and testing robotic prototypes and proof-of-concept systems.
- Conducting system integration, functional testing, commissioning and validation of robotic systems.
- Diagnosing and resolving mechanical, electrical, electronic, software and communication faults.
- Performing root-cause analysis and implementing corrective and preventative engineering solutions.
- Optimising robotic system performance, reliability, accuracy, speed and repeatability.
- Testing robotic systems under real-world operating conditions.
- Supporting the installation, commissioning and deployment of robotic systems at operational sites.
- Monitoring robotic system performance and identifying opportunities for automation and engineering improvements.
- Preparing technical documentation, system architecture information, test procedures, integration records and engineering reports.
- Maintaining accurate technical records relating to robotic system development, testing, configuration and performance.
- Working closely with software, AI and engineering teams to integrate robotics with intelligent automation platforms.
- Collaborating with end users to understand operational requirements and translate them into practical robotic solutions.
- Contributing to the continuous improvement of robotic system design, usability, safety and reliability.
Skills and Experience
To be successful in this position, you will have:
- A Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechatronics Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- Practical experience in robotics, mechatronics, automation or robotic system integration.
- Strong understanding of robotic systems and mechatronic engineering principles.
- Experience working with robotic arms, actuators, motors, sensors and other robotic hardware.
- Experience integrating mechanical, electrical and software components into robotic systems.
- Programming experience in Python, C and/or C++.
- Knowledge of robotic control systems and automation technologies.
- Experience with sensors, cameras, encoders, actuators and other robotic instrumentation.
- Understanding of hardware communication and industrial communication protocols.
- Experience with system integration, testing, debugging and commissioning.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex robotic hardware and software issues.
- Understanding of computer vision, object detection or image-processing technologies.
- Ability to work with Linux-based systems and software/hardware interfaces.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong technical documentation and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team.
Desirable Robotics Experience
The following experience will be highly regarded:
- ROS or ROS2 development and integration.
- Robotic arm programming and integration.
- Autonomous robotics and robotic navigation.
- Computer vision and AI-enabled robotics.
- Object detection, image processing and robotic perception.
- Laboratory robotics and automated laboratory workflows.
- Embedded robotics and edge-computing platforms.
- NVIDIA or similar hardware for robotics and AI applications.
- Docker and containerised robotics applications.
- Digital twin technologies for robotic and automated systems.
- Integration of robotics with sensors, cameras and automated handling equipment.
- Experience with safety-critical, regulated or mission-critical robotic applications.
- Hands-on experience building, assembling and testing robotic prototypes.
