We currently have an opportunity for an experienced COBOL Application Developer to join our IT team in a long-term, permanent role. This position is critical to the ongoing success of the business and is ideal for someone who is looking to build a lasting career, develop deep system and business knowledge, and become a trusted technical custodian of our core merchandise systems. Whilst initially working on reviewing and removing redundant code in the short term. This process will enable you to over time, gain a strong understanding of how the business operates end-to-end and play a key role in ensuring continuity, reliability, and future enhancement of our core platforms.

About the role
The Application Developer – COBOL is responsible for providing technical support and direction by maintaining, enhancing, and documenting the Company’s proprietary COBOL-based merchandise management system. This role also supports other internally developed applications and systems that integrate with the core merchandise platform.
What will you do?
- Maintain, support, and enhance the proprietary COBOL-based merchandise management system.
- Develop and support existing applications using COBOL in accordance with business-defined standards and best practices.
- Review, refactor, and optimise existing COBOL programs to improve performance, simplify logic, and remove redundant code.
- Design and implement system enhancements and technical solutions aligned to business requirements.
- Produce and maintain documentation, including process flows, system architecture, and user guides for new and existing applications.
- Ensure data integrity, system reliability, and security across supported applications.
- Support and maintain effective integration between the merchandise management system and other IT infrastructure.
- Manage, coordinate, and maintain intranet functionality, including the repairs tracking system.
- Assist with the development and support of other in-house managed applications as required.
- Perform daily stock replenishment activities to stores, including general picking.
- Complete ad-hoc tasks and general administrative duties as required.

- 3+ years’ experience in a similar role with application development.
- Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with COBOL programming.
- Solid understanding of ICT systems, processes, and application support environments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.
- Excellent analytical skills as well as close attention to detail.
- Ability to develop and maintain professional working relationships within the team and external stakeholders.
- Ability to deliver outcomes with minimal direct supervision.
- Proven ability to meet deadlines, manage competing priorities, and adapt in a changing environment.
