This recruitment pool will run for a period of twelve months and may be used to fill ongoing vacancies and permanent opportunities within the Adult Male Prisons, Adult Women's Prisons, Work Camps and Special Operations Group*.
Currently, there are 39 permanent positions available for immediate filling.
Applicants will be given the option to select two preferred locations throughout the application process. Facilities with low vacancies and high transfer lists will not be available for selection. Each preference is to be unique, selecting the same location twice will not be accepted. Promotion to your first preference will be given priority, however, cannot be guaranteed.
The option to select preferred locations for future vacancies will also be available throughout the application process.
About the role
Experienced staff with a Certificate III in Correctional Practice are invited to apply to join the Senior Officer pool.
Senior Officers are part of our leadership teams and act as role models, and lead and facilitate strategies to motivate both staff and people in custody. Senior Officers encourage people in custody to amend their behaviours in line with community expectations.
The Senior Officer is responsible for:
- Leading teams in the safe, secure and efficient operation of the prison and custody of offenders, duty of care (to people in custody and staff), reparation to the community and reduction in re-offending.
- Managing staff and resources to achieve identified outcomes; demonstrates and models expertise in the skills of the Prison Officer role.
- The ongoing development and monitoring of staff performance.
- Modelling and ensuring the implementation of Department of Justices’ policy as it relates to people in custody.
Eligibility
Qualification – Certificate III in Correctional Practice.
Permanent positions – To be eligible for appointment to permanent positions in the West Australian Public Sector you must be an Australian citizen or have permanent resident status in Australia.
WWC positions – In accordance with the National Child Safety Principles, people who work directly with children and young people, you must have a current Working with Children Check or be able to successfully apply for one to be eligible for appointment to this position.
Senior Officer Training Program (SOTP) – applicants must have undertaken or willing to undertake the SOTP at the Corrective Services Academy.
SOG Specialist Course* – In order to be placed within the Special Operations Group, applicants must complete the SOG Specialist Course.

Pool Recruitment
This pool will be open for a period of 12 months from the day after the breach of standard claim period closes. Permanent, fixed term, full time appointments may be offered as vacancies arise; however, an appointment is not guaranteed.
To be appointed to a vacant position, the successful applicant must be compliant with current leave policies and maintain currency in all required operational skills training.
The Department of Justice uses recruitment pools to build a bank of talent for future opportunities. Applicants found suitable in this pool, may be considered for subsequent, similar vacancies, with the Department of Justice for the duration of the pool.
