The Senior Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for maintaining, operating and conducting improvement work on Charters Towers Regional Council’s Water Treatment Plant, Weir Pumping Station and Sewerage Treatment Plant, while ensuring continuous operation of critical water and wastewater infrastructure through participation in rotating rosters and after-hours operational response. This position assists the Water and Wastewater Treatment Coordinator by proactively implementing processes, procedures and systems in the delivery of section initiatives and establishment of technical standards. This position operates the Charters Towers and regional townships Water and Wastewater Treatment plants to ensure compliance with Environmental and Health Authorities.
Employment Status: Full Time, Permanent – 76 hours per fortnight
Roster: This position operates on a continuous rotating roster of nine (9) consecutive working days followed by five (5) consecutive rostered days off.
Award: Level 9 of the Queensland Local Government Industry (Stream B) Award – State 2017
Salary Range: $2,879.60 gross per fortnight
ABOUT YOU
The successful candidate will have:
- Demonstrated leadership and experience within a similar role in Water and Wastewater treatment and/or significant experience in Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operation.
- Understanding of Water and Wastewater treatment techniques including emerging practices and technologies.
- Knowledge and understanding of quality assurance, environmental and risk management systems.
- The ability to work under limited supervision, either individually or part of a team.
- Proficient organisational and teamwork skills and the ability to determine work priorities.
- Strong verbal communication skills, including the ability to liaise with a wide range of people at all levels.
- Sound computer and administrative skills.
- Experience operating SCADA-controlled water and wastewater treatment systems.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Water Supply (Safety and Reliability) Act, Environmental Authority requirements and relevant drinking water quality management systems.
- Ability to work a continuous rotating roster comprising of nine (9) consecutive rostered working days followed by five (5) consecutive rostered days off.
| Essential Education/Qualifications |
- General Safety Induction Certificate (Construction Industry) “Blue/White Card”.
- Relevant industry qualification such as Certificate III in Water Industry Operations (Water/Wastewater Treatment) or an equivalent nationally recognised qualification.
- Confined Space Entry Certification.
- Operate Breathing Apparatus Certificate.
- Current First Aid and CPR accreditation.

| Physical Requirements / Position Environment |
This position requires the incumbent to undertake field work exposed to inclement weather.
- The ability to carry out the physical requirements of the position – manual handling, physical labour.
- Ability to enter confined spaces (where appropriately trained and authorised).
- Ability to wear respiratory protective equipment.
- This position operates on a continuous rotating roster of nine (9) consecutive working days followed by five (5) consecutive rostered days off. The incumbent is required to work weekends, public holidays, overtime and participate in Council's on-call roster.
- Undergo mandatory immunisation against Hep A & B and Tetanus. This is required as the work environment involves exposure to areas identified as "at risk" work areas.
