The organisation:
The Uniting Church in Australia (the Church) is a large uniquely Australian Christian denomination in Australia with heritage from historical reformed evangelical denominations. In Queensland, the Uniting Church has around 250 congregations and has early childhood, schools, colleges and large community services (such as UnitingCare Queensland and Wesley Mission Queensland).

Position purpose:
The purpose of this role is to deliver end-to-end People & Culture employee advisory and recruitment services across the organisation, providing practical, timely and risk-aware support to leaders and employees. The role works in partnership with stakeholders across Synod Office, Presbyteries, Congregations and the Northern Synod to manage employee relations matters, lead workplace investigations, and support effective workforce practices across the employee lifecycle. It plays a key role in building leadership capability, enhancing employee experience and supporting organisational initiatives, while contributing to talent attraction and employer branding through high-quality recruitment practices and active promotion of opportunities.
Key responsibilities:
- Provide end-to-end People & Culture advisory services across Synod Office, Presbyteries, Congregations and the Northern Synod, delivering practical, consistent and risk-aware support aligned to organisational needs.
- Partner with leaders to provide timely, commercially sound advice on employee relations, performance management and workforce practices, supporting confident and effective decision-making.
- Lead and manage employee relations casework, including disciplinary matters, grievances and underperformance, ensuring fair, consistent and defensible outcomes.
- Lead and conduct workplace investigations, including scoping, interviewing, evidence assessment and report preparation, in line with legislative and organisational requirements.
- Facilitate mediation and resolution processes, supporting constructive outcomes and maintaining working relationships where possible.
- Manage fitness for work and related case management processes, ensuring appropriate support, compliance and risk management throughout the employee lifecycle.
- Deliver end-to-end recruitment support across corporate and non-centre based roles, including position description development, advertising, sourcing, shortlisting, panel participation and appointment advice.
- Actively support talent attraction and employer brand efforts, including promoting opportunities through LinkedIn and other channels, and contributing to engaging, authentic recruitment campaigns.
- Coach and support leaders to build capability in people management practices, including performance conversations, employee engagement and early intervention.
- Support the consistent application of People & Culture frameworks, policies and processes across the employee lifecycle, identifying gaps and escalating opportunities for improvement.
- Contribute to the delivery of People & Culture initiatives and organisational programs that enhance culture, engagement and employee experience.
- Build trusted relationships with stakeholders, providing responsive and credible advisory services across a diverse and decentralised operating environment.
- Support employer branding and talent initiatives by delivering high-quality candidate and hiring manager experiences that reflect the organisation’s values and employee value proposition.
- Identify and contribute to continuous improvement opportunities across People & Culture processes, tools and service delivery.
Key performance indicators:
- Comply with delegations of the Office of Synod where delegations have been permanently or temporarily assigned to the position.
- Maintain alignment with the Office of Synod purpose, culture and values (values referenced under additional requirements).
Reporting relationship and delegations:
This position reports to the General Manager People & Culture.

Selection criteria:
Qualifications:
- Post graduate qualifications in a relevant field an advantage.
- Tertiary qualification in human resources or business management.
Experience and skills:
- Demonstrated experience in building client focused customer service teams.
- Demonstrated ability to assess and recommend new business initiatives.
- Demonstrated knowledge of case management.
- Commitment to working within the purpose and values of the Uniting Church in Australia, Queensland Synod and adhering to the policies, organisational requirements and processes.
Additional requirements:
- Current drivers licence – Presentation of a current drivers licence must be made before your appointment to the position can be confirmed.
- Inter/intra state travel, working out of hours.
- Suitability Card for Child Related Employment (Blue Card) – All adults who work with people under 18 years in Queensland are required to undergo a “Working with Children Check” under the screening provisions of the Commission for Children and Young People Act (2000).
