Overview of Role:
Pavement Techs are involved in most civil construction projects, typically found on projects such as roads,
bridges, footpaths, car parks, bike paths, container yards and airport runways.
Typically pavements we work on are bitumen spray seals, asphalt and concrete.
This work is mainly outdoors and requires physical fitness and due to restricted access to certain pavements,
night shifts may be required.
Pavement Tech Class 1 is an entry level of competence in the minimum requirements for various pavement
repair and maintenance activities. As a Pavement Tech Class 1 you start in the industry by carrying out a
variety of manual tasks. With experience you can move on to operating a range of specialised machinery
such as skid steer loaders, excavators, profilers, rollers, asphalt pavers , crack sealing machines, bitumen
sprayers(cold & hot), pressure grouting machines. Driving MR or HR/HC Trucks.
Personal Requirements:
To be successful as a Pavement Tech Class 1 you must:
- Have good comprehension of English (Speak, Read and Write)
- Have NSW OH & S General Induction (White Card)
- Have a Manual Drivers Licence
- Enjoy practical and manual work
- Enjoy working outdoors
- Be physically fit
- Have good eyesight and coordination skills
- Be safety conscious
- Be alert and observant
- Be self motivated
- Be able to work in a team environment
- Have good written and verbal communication skills
- Be able to follow verbal and written instructions
The Typical Range of tasks performed as a Pavement Tech Class 1 may include:
- Read understand and follow SWMS’S(Safe Work Method Statements) and Tool box meetings
- Follow instructions of your work supervisor
- Sweeping/cleaning pavement surfaces in preparation for bituminous surfacing operations
- Loading and unloading equipment from work trucks
- Safe handling of bituminous materials (hot and cold)
- Operating slat conveyor on a Flocon Truck
- Operating bitumen emulsion pump on a Flocon Truck
- Operating small plant and machinery
- Installing road barriers, cones and signs
- Jack hammering concrete or asphalt pavements with hand held Jack hammer
- Drilling through Concrete Slabs with hand held 25kg pneumatic drill
- Shovelling and Basic Hand spreading asphalt, road base and concrete
- Operating a forklift
- Using power and air tools
- Cleaning the worksite
