Primary objective
Under the direction of the Team Leader, lead and supervise a multi-disciplinary team to provide youth and family support services to
children, young people and their families experiencing challenging behaviours that are placing them at risk of anti-social or offending
behaviour in accordance with departmental policy, practice frameworks, Family Responsibility Agreements (FRAs) and statutory
obligations under the Care and Protection of Children Act and Youth Justice Act.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Ensure service delivery and staff practices align with the Aboriginal Cultural Security Framework, promoting culturally safe and
responsive engagement.
2. Responsible for the supervision, mentoring and development of a team of staff involved in the delivery of youth and family support
services to children, young people and their families to develop and enhance their skills, knowledge, and understanding of programs.
3. Undertake statutory responsibilities and exercise delegations under the Care and Protection of Children Act in accordance with
departmental policies and procedures in order to provide intensive family support services in line with the best interest of the child.
4. Work with families and stakeholders to implement Family Responsibility Agreements and SF comprehensive safety plans and provide
community outreach to support at‑risk children, young people and families across Central Australia, strengthening family capacity and
wellbeing.
5. Leads the delivery of intensive case management using the Signs of Safety, Signs of Success frameworks and Safe and Together model,
applying advanced strengths‑based and safety‑focused practice to assess risk, develop plans with families and support sustained
outcomes.
6. Build positive working relationships with government, non-government and private sector partners for the best interests of young
people.
7. Ensure reliable data by accurately and promptly recording information in client and case management systems.
8. Participate in compulsory training and comply with relevant legislation, codes of conduct and departmental policies to maintain current
practice knowledge and statutory compliance.
9. Participate in the After-Hours Service on a rostered basis when required.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. A degree of an Australian tertiary institution, which gives eligibility for membership of the Australian Community Workers Association,
the Australian Association of Social Workers, or the Australian Psychological Society, or equivalent OR Diploma of Child, Youth and
Family Intervention AND Vocational Graduate Certificate in Community Services Practice (Statutory Child Protection) or Graduate
Certificate in Safe Communities (Child Protection).
2. Demonstrated ability to deliver culturally appropriate services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, young people and
families, supported by strong understanding of Aboriginal cultures and effective engagement with diverse people and communities.
3. Highly developed interpersonal skills to build positive working relationships with the capacity to engage a diverse stakeholder group.
4. Experience working with children, young people and their families in a statutory setting, and demonstrated ability to communicate
appropriately with a range of health/welfare/justice clients and colleagues.
5. Advanced child protection and/or youth justice skills, demonstrated through complex case management experience, sound knowledge
of relevant practice and theory, and strong assessment and analysis of individual and family needs.
6. Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage time effectively, accept responsibility; contribute to ongoing quality assurance;
program development; and professional development.
7. Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as demonstrated excellent administrative and computer skills.
Desirable
1. In the order of five years relevant experience that includes at least six months experience of either child protection or youth justice
work and at a period of time working with complex families experiencing challenging behaviours.
2. Demonstrated knowledge of Child Protection, Youth Justice and Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence frameworks.
3. Current Northern Territory driver’s licence or the ability to obtain.
