The artwork created by the Artwork Department consists of: Photography, Sculptures, Mock-Rock, Structural, Painting, Drawing, Printmaking and carving. They are responsible for ensuring that projects meet the desired design and are safe for use within public areas, staff only areas and habitats. The role involves all aspects of working with concrete, including mixing, pouring, moving, shaping, finishing and handling concrete products and materials.
To be successful in this role, you must have a demonstrated understanding of Australia Zoo’s Vision, Mission and Goals. You must have the ability to work within a collaborative team, be dedicated to conservation and have a positive attitude.
Duties Include:
- Construct and assemble projects under the direction of the Artwork Manager.
- Create designs and prototypes to propose to the Artwork Manager, Chief Construction Officer and appropriate stakeholders.
- Select and arrange subjects and mediums as best suited for the particular project.
- Develop material lists for estimating and ordering of projects.
- Use a range of power tools and equipment whilst ensuring Workplace Health and Safety standards are met at all times.
- Maintain a safe and tidy working environment at all times, and ensure that any workspaces meet housekeeping guidelines at all times.
- Carry out responsive repairs to assets, animal habitats and facilities throughout Australia Zoo
- Ability to work independently and manage own time, also work collaboratively with other team members.
- Assist other trades when and as required even if these works deviate from the scope of a welder/fabricator (i.e carpentry, general labouring).
- Servicing of hoists and pulleys, winches, pneumatic cylinders.
- Operation and general maintenance of machinery.
- Communicate with the Head of Department regarding ideas to apply to the department.
- Remain competent and aware of all aspects of Zoo emergency procedures.
- Maintain relevant vehicles and trailers.
- Assist with general maintenance of all facilities, fences and signage in and around the Zoo.
- Develop and understanding of systems used throughout Australia Zoo.
- Read plans and specifications to determine the materials required, dimensions and installation process.
- Maintain tools and equipment.
- Assist with monitoring and directing safety checks within your work area.
Essential Criteria:
- Hold current Driver’s Licence.
- Hold a construction ‘white card’.
- Full availability, including weekends, public holidays, and school holiday periods.
- Welding/Fabrication trade qualification.
- Experience in fabrication, metalwork and structural welding is highly desirable.
