AV is currently accepting applications for the position of a primary care or emergency medicine Medical Advisor. The Medical Advisor will provide expert clinical support, advice and guidance to AV's Paramedic Practitioner Candidates (PPCs) and qualified Paramedic Practitioners (PPs) and serve as a key clinical escalation and advisory role within the broader Paramedic Practitioner (PP) program.
This is a part-time (0.5), two-year fixed term position. Although the role is predominantly hybrid, the position is based at our Essendon Fields Operations Centre with some statewide travel (as required).
About the role
Reporting to the Executive Medical Director of AV, the Medical Advisor will be responsible for ensuring consistent, high‑quality, evidence‑based clinical governance across the paramedic practitioner programme at AV, supporting safe service delivery and alignment with AV clinical standards and relevant health service requirements. The role will provide expert advice and guidance on scope of practice, clinical decision‑making, supervision frameworks, and risk management across the paramedic practitioner program.
Areas requiring support may include the clinical practice guidelines team, education, patient safety, projects, research and evaluation, regional operations or specialist operations. In addition, the Medical Advisor may, if appropriately qualified, provide a consultation by providing prompt, consistent, individualised, contemporary advice and risk assessment to paramedics requiring advice and support to manage complex or unique clinical situations.
Responsibilities of this position include but not limited to:

Provide senior medical oversight and work closely with Clinical leads and Clinical Supervisors in partner health services to support consistent and effective supervision, enabling PPCs to progress toward qualification while maintaining patient safety and clinical quality

Work collaboratively with partner health services to ensure appropriate clinical governance of Paramedic Practitioner activity within emergency departments and urgent care centres, and to ensure alignment with local governance frameworks and the broader PP program

Provide comprehensive, up to date, evidence based clinical support, advice and guidance to areas of AV including the Medical Advisor's area of specialty and general medical advice to other areas including clinical practice guidelines team, education, patient safety, projects, research and evaluation, regional or specialist operations

Support continuous improvement and the enhancement of clinical practice through effective case review and audit processes

Develop strong partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders and work collaboratively with others in the pursuit of shared goals

Demonstrate appropriate leadership in providing constructive feedback, coaching & training opportunities to others

Provide authority to paramedics to perform skills or procedures or administer medications that require physician authorisation in the relevant CPGs

About you
The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator with expertise in their relevant field and extensive understanding of pre-hospital environment. Other requirements include but not limited to:

Specialist registration with Medical Board of Australia (MBoA) and Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)

Appropriate specialist qualification (FACEM, FRACGP, FACRRM or equivalent)

Compliance with specialist college CME requirements

Current professional indemnity insurance
-
High level proficiency in telephone medicine including clinical assessment
-
Current experience in the management of undifferentiated and/or critically ill patients as appropriate to speciality background
-
Ability to make sound and rational decisions based on available information and communicate and take action in a clear and calm manner

Remuneration is aligned with Fractional Doctors (17.6+ hrs/week) rates under the Medical Specialists (Victorian Public Health Sector) Enterprise Agreement 2022-2026 reflecting the successful candidate's specialist year level.
