About the role:
We are seeking applications from suitably qualified Emergency Medicine Specialists to join the St Vincent’s Hospital Emergency Department. This is for a permanent Staff Specialist position, up to 1.0 FTE, commencing in July 2026.
The successful applicant must have considerable experience and expertise in Emergency Medicine, with specific expertise in a teaching hospital environment. This is a busy Emergency Department that sees a wide range of adult patients including trauma and mental health presentations. This position involves a particular commitment to improving service provision by the Emergency Department to patients affected by homelessness, poverty, drug and alcohol issues, social isolation and mental health problems.
Clinical duties required include:
- Providing specialist care to patients presenting to the Emergency Department;
- Improving service provision by the Emergency Department to patients affected by homelessness, drug and alcohol issues, social isolation and mental health problems;
- Providing emergency medicine consultation, supervision and education to specialist trainees, junior medical staff, undergraduates and allied health staff;
- Contributing to the management and function of the Emergency Department in promoting and providing safe, best practice and cost-efficient clinical service;
- Working within a multidisciplinary team environment, using excellent communication skills;
- Promotion of good patient care and the good reputation of the department and the hospital;
- Participating in research activities;
- Participating in weekend and out-of-hours duty as required.

Selection Criteria:
- Possess, or be eligible to possess, specialist registration with AHPRA;
- Possess, or be eligible to possess in the next two months, Fellowship of the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (FACEM) or equivalent as provided for in the Health Insurance Act 1997;
- Demonstrated knowledge, skills and high standards of clinical practice in Emergency Medicine and Trauma commensurate to experience which is appropriate to the requirements of the position;
- Demonstrated experience in managing patients affected by homelessness, drug and alcohol issues, social isolation and mental health problems
- Participate in the consultant on-call day and after-hours roster; including ED and the Psychiatric And Non-prescription Drug and Alcohol unit (PANDA)
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching at specialty registrar, junior medical officer and undergraduate levels;
- Demonstrated ability to provide high quality compassionate medical care as evidenced by recent practice experience in working congenially and collaboratively as both a leader and member of a multidisciplinary team, and as a provider of services that engender high levels of patient satisfaction and experience;
- Demonstrated ongoing contribution to the development, dissemination, and translation of new knowledge and practices commensurate with work in an academic teaching hospital environment;
- Work with colleagues in a professional and supportive manner including attending Consultant and other meetings relevant to developing and maintaining a quality service;
- Foster the promotion of standards of excellence in the provision of clinical and public services;
- Promote the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine (ACEM) standards of practice;
- Ensure that ACEM requirements for the experience and supervision of trainee specialists are met by providing clinical supervision to Registrars;
- Work within and respect organisational processes and clinical systems;
- Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries.
