Primary objective
To provide higher level technical support to the Operations Manager of the Medical Entomology Branch in the surveillance,
monitoring and control of insects of medical importance.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. To be responsible for the day-to-day conduct of trapping, sorting, identification, recording, and data outputs of medically
important insects.
2. To assist with overall mosquito taxonomy and be responsible for training and ongoing supervision of identifications of
technical staff in all mosquito taxonomy related aspects, in liaison with professional staff.
3. Assist with on-the-job training of technical staff in field and laboratory operations.
4. To carry out mosquito field surveys as team leader of technical officers, involving 4WD vehicles, all-terrain vehicles and
helicopters and deputise for the Operations Manager as required.
5. To keep records and write reports of mosquito field surveys.
6. To carry out and supervise vector control activities using insecticides.
7. To be responsible for the maintenance of insect sampling and vector control equipment for the mosquito monitoring and
control program.
8. To be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of the insect reference collection.
9. To produce aerial control Geographical Information System reports, assist with the improvement of such reports and be
responsible for the training of technical staff in Geographic Information System reporting.
10. To produce and maintain technical procedure manuals.
11. Be responsible for technical outputs of data such as graphs and tables.
12. Provide general technical support as required.
Selection criteria
Essential:
1. Certificate Associate Diploma or equivalent, with biology as major subjects and ability to carry out mosquito field monitoring,
survey and control in the NT.
2. High level of experience with the use of computers, Access databases and the use of Geographical Information Systems.
3. High level of knowledge of mosquito taxonomy and at least 3 years’ experience in the identification of mosquitoes to species
level.
4. Experience with staff training and supervision
5. The ability to work as a member and team leader of a small team, communicate effectively and provide effective and timely
feedback.
6. To be self-motivated and work under minimal supervision with a high degree of accuracy and reliability.
7. A high degree of skill and at least 3 years of experience with mosquito surveillance and control, including the use of
insecticides, control equipment and helicopter surveys and insecticide application programs
8. Holder of a current NT driver’s license.
