The Department of Communities and Justice is seeking permanent Child Safety Officers (CSOs) to join our team in Sydney. In this vital role, you will be responsible for safeguarding the well-being of children and young people across New South Wales. This opportunity is ideal for graduates or career changers with a background or strong interest in social work, youth work, counselling, or related fields.
What does being a CSO mean?
As a Child Safety Officer, you will work within a dedicated, collaborative team across one of several specialised areas, including:
- Investigation, Intake, and Assessment
- Ongoing Intervention, Parental Agreements, and Reunification
- Management of Short or Long-term Orders
- Placement Services
Your primary responsibility will be to advocate for the safety and welfare of children under the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998. Key duties include:
- Conducting casework, risk assessments, and complex case management
- Visiting children, families, and carers
- Attending court and preparing affidavits
- Partnering with agencies and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community organisations
You will also provide culturally respectful and responsive support to families from diverse backgrounds.
What we offer
- Starting salary aligned with PO3 classification: circa $90,000-140,000

What you need to succeed
To be considered for this role, you will need:
- An Australian Driver’s Licence and the legal right to work in Australia
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, or a related discipline, supplemented by relevant work experience or further study (see here for more details)
- A sound understanding of the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998, and the ability to write clear, accurate case notes
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
